I doubt this a new question but searching the archives I don't find the answer to my question.
NIS 2009 (16,2,0,7), Vista using Windows Mail.
When receiving email, especially with large attachments, an "envelope" icon appears in the notification area of the toolbar when Norton is scanning. This icon appears whether or not "Display Progress Indicator" is ticked in email settings.
When sending email I never see the scanning notification, regardless of the state of the "Display Progress Indicator" setting. There is a progress bar associated with Windows mail. I recall with previous versions of NIS that email "progressed" fairly rapidly out of Windows Mail and then there was a delay as Norton scanned it, and that Norton put up the envelope icon. Now I am seeing the Windows Mail progress bar move slowly with large attachments and additionally the packet count (viewed in "Local Area Connection Status) moves in sync with the progress bar, leaving the impression that outgoing emails are going straight to the Internet without being processed by Norton.
So, should I see the notification icon displayed on outgoing mail and is it possible that my observation that Norton is NOT doing an outgoing email scan correct?
Have a look at NIS settings - Internet Settings - Email Scan - configure.
The bottom section - What to do......
I have all three checked - the icon I believe is the the envelope you mention - ant it surely shows incoming (arrow in) mail and I think it shows very quickly the outgoing.
The progress indicator show some time during outgoing mail and the envelope shows some time during incomeing mail.
I use Outlook 2003 and WinXP.
This may be things you already know.
My only suggestion is to turn on Nortons Progress indicator and see what happens along with the Windows mail stuff.
I downloaded the EICAR string into a text file and also directly into the body of a test email. (All with AV protection turned off). I placed emails to myself, one containing the test string in the body and one as an attachment, in my outbox. I then enabled AV protection and hit Send. There were no indications or alerts of any kind but evidently both were blocked because I didn't find them when I examined my inbox directly on my server. So I guess outgoing email scanning/blocking is occurring. Copies of these emails are in my Sent mail folder but I can't open the attachment. The test file continued to sit on my desktop until I tried to open it. It was then deleted with Norton alerts.

Oh oh, more confusion. I sent the EICAR file out as an attachment to an email with AV protection turned OFF. I looked at my inbox on my server and it WASN'T there! So my ISP is probably blocking these emails either on the way out or coming in. What it means is that I still don't really have confirmation that NIS 2009 is doing any outgoing email scanning.
OK, I embedded an EICAR test file in a large ZIP file and sent it to myself with AV enabled. I observed that packets were actually being sent out. Doesn't that indicate that Norton is NOT scanning my outgoing mail?

If you un-check the Progress Indicator, there should be no Notifications; have you tried that?
That’s the point. Checked or un-checked I never see notification for outgoing mail. I’d really like to have some indication that Norton is doing its job.

How is the Check inside Zip archives set?
Did you look inside your Zip to see if Eicar is still there?
Have you looked at the three sections for "email" in the Index for Help for NIS2009 -- there is a lot there about settings and what they do.

Not sure what "Check inside Zip archives set" refers to. Compressed files scan is set on. Automatic removal is set off.
EICAR.txt is still in my zip file. If I attempt to open it Norton complains.
In the three sections of email settings everything is checked and I set "ask me what to do" for detected worms.
As I said, every indication is that Norton is letting the infected file go out (SOMETHING is in all those packets being sent and there is no notification of outgoing email scan) When I go online to look at my mailbox on the web (I'm sending the infected file to myself) the Zip file is NOT there. I believe it is being blocked by my ISP's software.
Under email settings there is "Display icon in System Tray" and "Display progress indicator". Where is the progress indicator displayed? (another Norton window?). I have them both checked and there is no indication other than the Windows Mail progress bar.

In the early builds with NIS, it did work for me, the progress indicator box popped up just above the system tray. like when Auto-protect notifies.
But in the later builds and the first release (16.0.0.125) even though the boxes were checked the progress indicator never showed up again first it happened to incoming, then both incomming and outgoing.
My progress bar is still showing for scanning outgoing NAV2009... awile back it was popping up behind the present window . Might try minimizing the window when you send --- to see if it may be behind.
Mail envelope shows in taskbar both send and receive..

How about the notification (little envelope) icon in the taskbar? Do you see it for both incoming and outgoing?
Little envelope does show both ways. Can be very quick if message is small.
I notice incoming mail with pics and or attachments will show the envelope longer.
An outgoing seems faster and sometimes very quick and progress indicator seems longer.
Probably a simle answer to this -
Size of short, small message may get in or out without spotting envelope or progress.
It seems when I receive a big message incoming - the envelope shows arrow in for a noticable amount of time then my Outlook loads showing quick process of the message - do not think I see Norton progress scan in as well as Outlook!!??

Thanks for that information. It sounds like the program is working for you the way one would expect. I am doing all my testing with quite large emails so I should see the Norton indications for several seconds.
To answer another observation about the progress window. I have hidden/minimized everything on the desktop, including hiding the toolbar, and still no progress window appears. I am pretty sure at this point that Norton is NOT scanning my outgoing emails. Thanks, everybody, for your help. Now to get Norton techs to give me some assistance with this without their resorting to the fictitious statement that Norton doesn't support scanning of Windows Mail emails.
