Here's a way to get it back: everyone stops buying Norton until we get control of the software installed on our computers! Most software companies are using "clouds" more & more. I see a STORM brewing. Remember George Orwell's novel "1984" ? Big brother IS watching!!!
If you want a local safe you have to Install 2012 version, set up Identity safe, then upgrade to 2014. This is frustrating as Windows 8.1 is not compatible with 2012 anymore. So let's see the local vault back in 2015 version please
I'll jump on this thread too. I HATE the online vault. That is the only thing I can't stand, and if it does not return, I will let my subscription run out and switch to something else. Having a local vault is so much simpler due to not having to worry if Norton servers are up and running, or having issues with loggin in (which plagued my last two previous attempts at giving cloud vault a try). Keep it local with the option to back up to the cloud.
Add my voice to those who want an Offline (transparent, easy-to-use) vault. I travel alot, often without access to wifi or an open network. I keep MANY passwords and ACCOUNT NUMBERS in the valut.
- - - IF I can find another service that syncs the vaults, and keeps it available on the local machines - I will not renew my 360 .... and I have been with "Peter" since the days of DOS 2.1
Bring back the local identity safe. I will -never- put personal info in the cloud, ever.
If that were true, you would have no need for a password manager of any kind. Those accounts you are logging into are in the cloud. Your user profile, the transactions you make, and the information you submit in each account are stored on somebody's server, somewhere.
However, I think the point here is that the Norton IDSafe online vault stores ALL your login ids and passwords on the same server (or at least on servers run by the same company). This is different to individual accounts and personal details being held on individual company's servers around the web - you might get hacked on one of them, say, and that will only affect that particular account. But if the online vault gets hacked, that affects ALL your login ids and passwords in one go.
Interesting that we've had 11 pages of comments on this subject, with an almost unanimous "let's have the local vault back", but not a single comment yet from Norton. I don't think they want to know.
At the top of the window as I write this post it states "We listened and version 2 of the ABC checker has arrived ...give us your feedback!"
Well, if Norton really listened, the Local Vault would be reinstated and this 12 page invaluable feedback from paying customers would have responses from Norton indicating that they were aware of concerns and were trying to find a compromise (such as giving users the OPTION/CHOICE to use either an online or local vault) to ensure that their valued customers had piece of mind and felt that their security solution was really designed with them in mind.
Norton, if you honestly value customer feedback, you should do much more than remain silent on an issue that so many of your customers feel SO strongly about.
They only listen to customer feedback when it is to their benefit! They obviously see no benefit to letting users have the local vault, they want control of our information and I'm sure they have plans sometime in the future to start charging us for keeping it. Users have been asking for the return of the local vault since it was 1st taken away over 2 years ago and they have yet to even reply on the issue to say nothing about acting on it.
I didn't realise the vault had gone into the Clound until I started using NIS on my Windows Surface as my laptops have 360 installed which still has a local vault option although it does ask periodically if you want to use the Cloud. I guess this will be removed in future.
Whether or not people are correct that the Cloud is either safe or unsafe depending on their point of view and whilst I understand the validity of their arguement. In the end this does not matter as much as the many people who have told Symantec/Norton that they are not happy with the situation. To have this many posts on a subject in a relatively small forum must mean that there are many more unhappy customers who know nothing of this forum, do not bother to post, or just quietly drift away at the end of their subscription. What is even worse in my opinion is that Norton are not even concerned enough to at least explain their views and reasoning when we as customers could make up our minds, to just ingore a customer makes them very angry.
Like many previous posters I have always used Norton since obtaining my first PC at home pre 2000 but now am considering leaving at the end of my subscription.
I did ask in another forum Landzdown for those who may know it about Password Managers and received this advice copied below. I have not looked into any of it nor checked to see if any of them are locally or cloud stored but you may like to check them out.
I highly recommend the use of a good software based password safe. With a password safe you only have to remember one (ideally, very strong) password, the one into your safe. I've been glued to a Palm PDA of some sort since the Palm III, and a happy user of Spash ID Safe almost as long. If your phone/PDA is similarly attached to you, I highly recommend it. All your passwords stay with you - totally encrypted. But the best part for me is not the mobile app, it is the Windows Desktop version that comes with the package. It is an excellent safe that lets you categorize passwords, kids social security #s, floor safe combination, bicycle locks, PINs, credit cards, bank accounts - whatever and however you want. Then it syncs with your phone/PDA's safe for an instant, secure backup!! A good thing.
If you don't need a PDA version, the Spash ID Safe Desktop version is excellent on it's own, though perhaps a bit pricey. Other recommended safes include, Password Safe, KeePass Password Safe and Robo Form is a favorite of many.
One other small point I think it says a lot about a Company and their attitude toward customers when as soon as you buy and instal Norton they are reminding you to renew every time you open the main screen, this does annoy me but have tried to ignore it which is very difficult to do. Not particularly important and has no relevance to the working of Norton but a niggle all the same. Having spent some time working in hospitality recently I notice one small insignificant niggle leads to bigger niggles and an accumulation of them leaves a very unhappy customer.
I am not a good supporter of cloud where your privacy is at mercy of someone, but think cloud is essential in some cases. As soon as I found Norton migrated the local vault to cloud only with a simple click, I switched to lastpass, keeping norton id safe as backup. It was like you were given a feature in a program to utilize it to create the best document in the world, but you cannot save it to your local disk. Unless Norton is taking steps to bring back the local vault feature, I am thinking to stick to lp. ( If lastpass and Norton ID safe are compared, its like an elephant to a monkey in case of features and simplicity, may be because of my complex views;) ) I know Norton needs to maintain the codes and modules for local vault [dont tell that products like nss are not yours!] and expect a positive progress like say, Requesting user in settings or during installation whether to create a local vault and give them a choice to sync in cloud or by default cloud is enabled but you can configure local vault if needed. Does Symantec think their cloud servers are reliable 24x7x365? Will they ever publish a security audit report to public or atleast their customers unless they make it complex and complex and complex and the ultimate worst issue? Is Symantec / Norton engineers 100% of 100% sure, no one except user can access user’s data in any form, at any given point of time and situation? Still keeping a ray of hope…
Folks, I’ll be honest: I’ve switched to Kaspersky Puré 3.0, that gives me the option we all asked from Norton (with no return): a local password vault. No regrets, so Norton 360 was left in the past (for me), to be honest I do not think about coming back.
Since it's obvious that Norton doesn't care enough to respond to the concerns in this thread, it's time for me to say goodbye. I've used their products for longer than I can remember, but they obviously don't care about their customer's concerns.
Since my subscription expires this week, I'll be trying out other security products. I've disabled Identity Safe and am trying out Dashlane. I think I'll try Bitdefender Internet Security as it seems to get lots of good reviews. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I've been waiting to decide whether to upgrade to Win 7 or 9, but for now I'm still running XP.
I would give Kaspersky Pure 3.0 a chance. I’ve tried BitDefender and it had some issues (for example, I couldn’t configure its password manager to confirm my intention to save passwords). The support didn’t work well. Kaspersky Pure 3.0 had its compatibility issues with Firefox, now solved. It allows lots of detailed configurations, what makes me recommend it for savvy users. Best Regards
Hi Maverick, If you are having problem with id safe only, then I suggest you to stay back and use lastpass as your password manager. I say it because, I see Norton is one of best security software. The only limitation of lastpass is that mobile devices are supported only in paid version. I haven’t faced any compactability issues between its plugin and browser updates. Please note that lastpass not only stores your data locally but encrypted data is stored in cloud too. Lastly, decision is yours…
