As long as you are getting Virus Definitions every-eight-hours via Automatic LiveUpdate - it does say that A.LU. Runs? - then you will be Secure.

symantec have a "Patch" which they are working on to Resolve a few Issues with Norton LiveUpdate.

There is no message box telling you that pulse updates are running. Dont go by the CPU chart. What does it say next to the right of Run Live Update? Look at Definitions Update.

It should still change if it Runs, although, when it ran a few times, it did not change in the graph, so, I somewhat agree with Dieselman743.  And I have had times where the "Definition Updates" did not change too.

I t always changes for me. Everytime I open up NIS it says 5 minutes. or 10 minutes. Or 1 hour. Or 4 hours.

Thanks for the link to ChrisopherA’s message on the bug.

I have the exact same problem with NIS 2009 on my vista desktop. Pulse Updates and Automatic LiveUpdate never run. I can run LiveUpdate manually without any problem. I have been emailing back and forth with ChristopherA who says that he is consulting with MikeO, but they have not yet given me a fix. Any help here would be appreciated.

If modders are working on it which are Symantec employee’s I don’t see what help your looking for. You have the bets team on it. Maybe its a Vista thing.

I suspect maybe it is a Vista thing. Very frustrating.

I know this doesnt help but this why I will never upgrade to Vista. I bought a new Dell Gaming Laptop and had XP installed and not Vista.

Smart move. I have a new desktop from Dell too, a Vostro that I use for business as well as personal. Unfortunately I had them install VIsta Business. Thought I’d get the newest OS and be on the cutting edge. Go figure. Anyway, I have managed to finally get all programs working well, but this NIS 2009 issue has me stumped.

If these guys can’t help me, I may ultimately have uninstall 2009 version and reinstall 2008. 2008 worked fine on this machine. That would be a shame because I like the feel of 2009.

You are right, we got same situation. It's weird that NIS 2008 worked well, but 2009 doesn't work, I like 2009 very much too, it's light, smooth except its automatic liveupdate function, there is must some thing wrong, in NIS2009 or Vista. I tried 16.0.0.125 version of NIS 2009, by now, 10 hours are past ... ...

Thank you for your guys' reply, hope the patch can work as soon as possible, because many ones met the problem.

My laptop: Vista Ultimate, service pack 1

My internet connection: ADSL, PPPOE.

I already got some information about Pulse Update problem form Symantec Principal Software Engineer...

Everyone please wait ... They will release Pulse Update HOTFIX as soon as possible !

Cheers!

Thanks Bug. Much appreciated.

It's unfortunate but not weird since the way updating works in 2009 versions is totally different to previous versions. Each application now has its own update module tailored to it specifically whereas previously Symantec Live Update was an individual utility installed in Control Panel and getting updates for all Norton products that it found on your drive, not just for one of them.

In part this is what Pulsing is all about and why it can work on the new applications.

A point to remember -- if you only have one Norton application installed you can remove Symantec Live Update in Remove Programs when you upgrade to 2009 but don't do this if you have Norton non-2009 applications as well.

So my CPU Usage screen says that the following Background Jobs have never run:

Automatic LiveUpdate

Norton Community Watch

Norton Insight Submission

Pulse Updates

Are you saying that each has it's own update module?

huwyngr,

OK, I got it. thank you for your explanation.

Bug,

A hotfix? oh, that's so great! Thank you and thanks the symantec engineers who are working on it.

Bug, one question: how does Symantec communicate the release of HOTFIX(s) so that we know when they are available?

The hot fix will come via Live Update. Most likely you will need to reboot afterwards.
