Recently, when opening Quicken a pop-up asked me if I'd like to download the new version. I opted for "remind me later". I suspect it is this initial internet communication when launching the program that is tripping over new securities. Not sure. And the program won't launch at all. Just "failure to launch" or something like that and then windows troubleshooter comes on automatically and says something is preventing the program from launching. :-(
I have checked with the Quicken support database and there are known compatibility issues with Windows Vista and Windows 7 that cause the program to launch improperly particularly after the last round of updates released for Windows 7 by Microsoft. Quicken recommends that you try opening the program and performing the requested update to see if that resolves the issue. Please let me know if this works.
Try un-installing both NIS and NU then restart the computer; see if Quicken runs as it should accept any offers to update your Quicken product if/when presented. If it does we will run the Norton Removal Tool and then re-install the Norton products one at a time until the problem returns this will identify which one is responsible for the issue. We can go from there.
i've spent so much time at the computer today. installing.
ok. i'll uninstall both.
attempt quicken again.
accept update if offered.
then I'll come back here for the next steps.
may consider putting this all off until tomorrow.
dinnertime here. all day attending the needs of the computer.
well. I'll be back for your help.
thanks.

Hi! Nanp,
Okay. Let me know if you decide to wait until tomorrow and we can setup a time to continue. Please be sure not to browse to any other sites other than this forum and the Quicken update site so that we can keep your computer as safe as possible.
OK. It's the NUtilities. I uninstalled just that and quicken worked. I did not uninstall NIS yet. only NU.
quicken opened. popup asked me if i wanted to update. yes. updated. opened program.
SO.
NU is the issue.
Quicken evidently checks my version status before launching the program.
there must be some kind of internet comminication, something that indicates what the latest version is available, crossref w/ what I have. I suspect this could be a setting in NU that needs tweaking. Allow Quicken to access the internet.
Once the update was finished, when it was ready to actually launch the program, then I entered the password as usual. It always begins by demanding a password. (There is no "remember this password" saved sort of option . it will always require I type in the password.)
I did use NU and NIS today allowing it to design faster boot time, as well as other efficiencies. ie., I allowed it to "clean" a lot of things out. Basically, anything it wanted to "clean", I let it.
OK. That's the status here. I appreciate your suggestion for the next step. Can we reinstall NU together and check the settings?
According to this Quicken Support page for 2006 you can download the latest patch without having Q2006 on the same computer let alone working so it might be worth trying that.
Note: Installing any patch will automatically install all earlier patches. For example, R5 will include all the updates contained in R4, R3 and R2. So you only need download patch 5.
Worth trying that and seeing if that solves the problem.
You may want to think about getting a more recent version -- they tend to be discounted and bundled with a free other program like Norton Internet Security at this time of the year -- since I think I got a notice when I started up my 2008 the other day that I would no longer be able to download certain data (bank statements?).
PS I see I posted this not having seen the second pages of messages and that you had resolved the problem ... ata least I hope you could update your Quicken.
go have your dinner, sorry. i'll check back at 8 to see what you say. i'm just burnt out. 8 is getting late for me to be wrangling with computer probs. i've been at this all day. seriously. all day.
