Ran Driver Updater -- and it's cancelled the sound on my computer

After my latest scan, Norton informed me that I had 19 outdated drivers on my Lenovo Yoga laptop. I ran the Driver Updater. Now, my computer has no sound level – anywhere – even though my Realtek Audio Console is still installed. Settings indicates that no input or output device is present. I see this is not the first time this has happened,

Caveat: I do not run Norton Driver Updater

I just spent an hour on the toll-free phone with Norton Tech Support. Ravi A reviewed the entire list of drivers on the Updater list. It took more than one attempt, but he managed to revert my computer to an older version of the Intel Smart Sound driver (the version that was most likely preinstalled when I bought the computer in late 2020), and reinstall the integrated RealTek mic and speakers.

I do not intend to use Norton Driver Updater again.

Thanks for posting progress

As a computer repair professional, I agree with bjm. Drivers are something that should never be touched, unless you are actually trying to fix something. I, too, am dismayed by Norton releasing a driver updater, especially since there is no extra money in it for them.

Sorry. You are right. They DO want to sell you a program, and make more money, to mess with drivers that should not be messed with. If it’s not broke- don’t fix it.

All: This is an example thread where another user, among many, ran DU. The results were not good. My recommendations are in this thread, they concur with what others are saying here. Maybe at some point DU will become a “matured” product and ready for prime time. Currently that isn’t the case.

I had similar issue. Recently renewed my Norton 365 and was offered driver updater on a free trial. Laptop was working fine before but because of the Norton marketing saying drivers need updating I used Norton updater. Since I used it I have no sound, no audio input or output and core isolation is now off. So much for making performance better it’s made it a 100x worse! Regret ever having it installed and now have a big headache on how to fix it! Thanks Norton.

Agreed. Since I renewed, I’ve had nothing but challenges with my computer - and the thing is, why weren’t these issues made apparent to me prior to the renewal? So disappointed in Norton right now as their fear tactics are no longer reflective of the company I signed on with years ago. Recommendations to undo the status I find myself in?
