Registry Cleanup Error

Norton 360 seems to be running fine - except when I run the Registry Cleanup, which continues on and on and on and never seems to reach a completion. Help please.

Hi Bug,

If you'd like someone to help you troubleshoot this error, I think you'll have to provide more information. The more information you can provide, the better the chances someone could help you identify what's wrong.

Some details that may prove helpful are:

What operating system are you using?
What product version are you using?
Do you have any other security products installed?
What were you doing when the incident happened?
What is the expected behavior?
What is the actual behavior?

And anything else you think might prove helpful. Again, the more information, the better.

Thank Dave

OS : Vista SP1 (zh-TW)

Vresion : Norton 360 3.0.0.134 CH

No other security products

What were you doing when the incident happened?     unknow
What is the expected behavior?                                     unknow
What is the actual behavior?                                          Registry Cleanup Error , everytime

<< Vresion : Norton 360 3.0.0.134 CH >>

Normally CH is the code for Switzerland (Confederation Helvetic) and I think you are in China = CN ?

<< Registry Cleanup Error >>

Are you telling Dave C what the Chinese text says? Is that all it says?

OS:

(zh-TW) = ZhongHua Taiwan

(zh-CN) = ZhongHua China

(en-US) = English United States

 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CH for Norton : CH = Chinese Traditional (Taiwan or Hong Kong)

CS for Norton : CS = Chinese Simplified (China)

Two type , different !

Hello huwyng

I come from Taiwan !

For this error , Chinese and English just as the image in my first post

Registry Cleanup = 登錄清理

Error = 錯誤

Thanks for filling in the gaps in my knowledge .....

rcmlaw,

Are you able to get any further details about the "error"?  Are you able to manually backup the registry before trying to run the Registry Cleanup?

Try the following and let me know if you see any errors:

1. start -> all programs -> accessories -> command prompt -> right click, select run as admin
2. winmgmt /salvagerepository

You are not alone my friend, I also have the same issue. I get the same error after a failed attempt of running the registry cleanup. Hope this can be resolved!

Hi rcmlaw,

Do you have any antispyware program other than Norton program? Can you confirm the version shown in your Norton 360 as 3.0.0.135?

Symantec will be releasing the next version 3.5 (patch) soon, you can wait till that. Otherwise, make sure that you have got all Windows Updates installed. I would suggest you to run LiveUpdate repeatedly until you get the message "no more updates", restart the computer and then try to run registry cleanup again.

No AV other than Norton.

Problem seems to be with Windows Automatic Restore Points in Vista Home Premium. See my post and others at http://www.online-it-support.co.uk/?p=389. Or search"vista restore point 8004230f." The problem has been widely reported, but so far I have not been able to find a solution that works for  me.

Norton courteously attempts to create a Restore Point before modifying the registry. If Restore Points is not working, Registry Cleaner returns an error.

Here is how I was able to get the Registry Cleaner to work:

1. Open Control Panel, System.

2. In the left panel, click the link "System Protection."

3.Click "Continue" if the User Account Control dialog appears.

4. Click the "System Protection" tab.

CAUTION. THE NEXT STEP WILL DELETE ANY RESTORE POINTS SAVED ON THE SYSTEM FOR DRIVE C: (but if you are having the problem I have been having, there won't be any restore points to delete.)

5. In the "Automatic Restore Points" frame, uncheck "OS (C:) (System).

6. Click "Apply" and "OK."

7. Go back and run Registry Cleaner. CAUTION: REGISTRY CLEANER WILL NOW WORK, BUT IF IT CHANGES SOMETHING IT SHOULDN'T, YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO ROLL BACK TO A RESTORE POINT. Registry Cleaner does maintain a log, however, so if something needs to be restored, you should be able to figure out what it is.

Nate:

I regret that I did not see your post until after I spent hours figuring out that I have a problem with System Restore that was impacting Registry Cleaner. Your query about System Restore would have gotten me there a lot sooner.

What got me headed in the right direction was the message I got when I tried to run Registry Cleaner this morning--something to the effect that Registry Cleaner was unable to "take" a Restore Point. Much more helpful than the generic error message I was getting before. I don't know if the message changed because of something I did or if LiveUpdate fixed something.

By the way, winmgmt /salvagerespository reported  "WMI repository is consistent."

Thanks for the reply.

See my immediately preceding post. I just checked my version of Norton 360 and it is now version 3.5.2.10, so LiveUpdate must have updated me from 3.0.whatever.

Thanks for the reply.

Hi shubby,

Welcome to the Norton Community.

Can you tell us your exact version of N360 from Help & Support > About?

Can you try to create a manual restore point directly through the Windows interface and see if this works? This will help determine if this is a Windows problem or N360 problem.

Thanks very much.

Allen

i have norton 360 v4.2.0.12 and do i create a manual restore point.

Hi shubby,

Do you have any other security software (anti-virus, etc) installed other than N360? Has this problem been present from day  one or did it start more recently? Did you have a prior version of N360 and if so which one? Have you seen any other problems with N360 apart from this?

Thanks

Allen

K i found the problem it was cause of i had some other security software and now i uninstalled them and it works(its just scanning).

If any errors occurs i will infor again. but for now thx.

Hi shubby,

You are most welcome and thank you for coming back to let us know the problem is resolved.

What other security software did you have? It would be best to remove the other software with a special removal tool supplied by the software manufacturer. This is always better than a typical uninstall for anti-virus or anti-malware software. This is because this type of software integrates tightly into the OS and sometimes a typical uninstall can leave things behind which can conflict with your new security software.

Best wishes.

Allen

I had Spyware Doctor before.
