Recently had to upgrade CPU to Windows 7 & the Norton Reputation Scan is missing. Noticed in the past, that it only scanned 15% or less of my files. Is the reputation scan important?
Hi
When I perform a full reputation scan, NIS2011 detects a bad file named "unicows.dll". This file is a part of free software "OpenOffice.Org" and located in :
C:/Program Files/OpenOffice.Org3/URE/bin/unicows.dll
Norton File Insight recognizes it as untrustworthy.
However, NIS won`t quarantine the file and this time recognizes it as good file that can`t be quarantined!
How can I fix this issue?
Thanks
azghmed, thanks for bringing to my attention the tool, reputation scan. I did a file insight scan, and sure enough, it was identified as “bad” way back in January, although I’d never received notice of any kind. In any event, this file has never been used by my OpenOffice. I’ve had this Suite for sometime, but I’ve never really used the other components other than the spreadsheet and word processing. Oddly, in the folder you cited, it’s the ONLY file that’s older than 2010 birthyear (2003). Depending on your usage of OpenOffice, rename this file by appending to the front or end of the name something like-- bad. Run the program and see if the file is missed or not. I’ve done so and nothing seems amiss. By the way, LibreOffice, which is a breakaway from OpenOffice (whose management changed business philosophy), performs the same functions under different management and retained business philosophy. Its folder does not contain the “bad” file. My conclusion is the file wasn’t properly cleaned up and disposed of by the OpenOffice crew. If this post ends up in a difficult to read continuous lines of words, I really tried, with indents and paragraphs. FF4.
Hi Tony,
OpenOffice is definitely not a security risk and is a very reputable program owned by Apache (formerly Oracle and Sun).
There is actually a new version of OpenOffice (3.4) which is a pretty major update since the company changed owners. I would try downloading the new version and running the test again.
Either way, as long as the "Computer Scan" or heuristics don't show those files as infected, you are fine.

I installed the program recently, after I ran the previous scan. This was the first scan I ran since I installed the program. How is reputation scan different from regular virus scan?

Hi,
The reputation scan looks at the time the program has been available and the number of people who are using it. That and a few other parameters help determine how safe/suspicious it is and how closely it needs to be watched.
The virus scan looks for infections regardless of the reputation of the program.
Thanks. How can I get it to show up in reputation scan or norton insight?
I just ran a full system reputation scan, but one of my programs was not in the list. Why was it excluded from the results? Is there a setting that I should change to make sure the scan includes all programs?
I just ran a reputation scan and found two files that have been flagged as known bad files. One was outllib.dll and the other was 19682.msi. They are asking me to quarantine them. I can't find the second file but the first outllib.dll looks like a windows operating system. Should I quarantine these files?
Thank you for your response. I did a search on the outllib.dll. It is located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft and looks like OUTLLIB.DLL. The 19682.msi is not found with a search but when I hit locate on the reputation screen it comes up under C:\Windows Installer Package. The reputation scan says that they each came out less then a week ago. I'm starting to think that this may just be a blip in the reputation scan but your expert advice would be well appreciated.

Hi,
What you are saying here is inconsistent.
CPU upgrade has nothing to do with Reputation Scan.
Please provide some correct info, and also which is the version of your Norton product.

Computer person removed everything when he installed Windows 7 for me. I had Windows XP before. He reinstalled my Norton 360, but the reputation scan is missing. Is it important to have?

Hi,
For me no, for other yes, BUT, no matter what, this could indicate that you are having a corrupted installation of Norton.
I'd suggest that you uninstall your program, and reinstall again.
See if the Reputation Scan is available now.

Hi Skymotor,
From what I know, the Reputation Scan is no longer present in the latest versions of Norton products, check which version of N360 are you using and let us know, the latest is the 20.2.0.38
Thank you,
Sandro

Hi Sandro,
I was referring to the Norton Insight Scan and I think that the OP meant that also.
If he was referring to previous versions of NIS then yes, Reputation Scan is not present in NIS 21.
Regards,
Yup, the Reputation Scan was replaced by the Repair Tool (Norton Power Eraser) in version 21.

Also, since the OP doesn't mention what version of N360 he has, I'm free to assume that he has not necessarily the latest version.
Hope it's clear now.

You can ass-u-me anything your desire!
Although I don’t know why a “computer person” would not install the most recent version??
