I think that the Safe Web Issue should be added to the Hot Topics Pinned Thread. It may or may not be strictly a Norton problem, but it is a way to notify all Norton users that come to the Forum that there is a problem and that Norton is aware of it and the appropriate team is working to resolve the issue. Since it affects everyone who uses the main search engines. Everyone looks for those icons to have some more assurance that the sites are supposed to be safe.
I know that the Safe Web Team has notified the appropriate Team to look into the situation. The Safe Web Team is hoping that it will be solved soon, but it sounded like they don't know if it will be solved soon or not. We are starting to get threads now from angry users complaining it hasn't been fixed in a week's time and there is no notice from Symantec about this issue. Most people don't like using Ask or Bing that do have the icons. They seem to be all asking about Google not having them. I know I rely on them when I have to look about stuff while trying to help users. Thanks.
I am seeing this new "OK" Safe Web search icon also ... for about a week or two now.
I was leery of it, too, as it had not been specifically mentioned in the FAQ about the changes to the Safe Web icons. When I first saw this "OK" icon, I thought ... OK? What does that mean?
I have the Norton toolbar and use the Norton Safe Search box, which is using ask.com ... tin
Thanks tinfoilhat, the safe search box was the key. I normally do standard Google searches and have not seen any difference in the icons but when I specifically use the safe search box I see the same thing being described here.
If you hover the mouse over any of these icons it will give you more detail about the rating and provide a link to the full report if you want to look at that.
Anything with green is a good rating.
I will ask Symantec if they are planning on updating the icon definitions at http://safeweb.norton.com/ but any variations in the green icons are most likely going to be pretty subtle as anything with green is considered a good rating.
Only one word of caution, any green rating is never a guarantee of a websites safety since a website can be compromised at any time after being tested.
I believe the "OK" you are seeing is part of the transition noted in the link provided by floplot.
Using Norton 360v5 Beta, all of the green icons have the "OK" and the shopping cart is gone. This holds true for all supported searches, not just Norton Safe Search.
AllenM - Sorry about the delay getting back to you all. I hope I'm not breaking any rules, by showing these websites. What I did was did was type in WinZip in the Norton Safe Search box. It brought up a page of suggested webpages, and these had the green circle with the white check mark inside. For some reason I clicked on the refresh tab by accident and that is when these different icons showed up. It didn't create any problem, just looked different.
Floplot - I thought that change was only to the shopping cart and green checkmark, on the toolbar, not beside websites searches.
From what Phil said these are expected changes and he indicated that all search engines are coming up with these new icons in the N360v5 BETA.
I cannot however see your image until a moderator approves it.
Edit: Wow, that was quick this time. I can now see your image. This is the same thing I see and which Phil indicates are intended changes in the site safety symbols.
It looks like I was right also about the fact that there would be changes coming along. Since i don't use NIS, I couldn't see the changes. That announcement on top did say there were changes coming, so it looks like they are in the transition phase of making the changes.
Hi, AllenM ... thanks for the followup ... I appreciate that you will ask Symantec to update icon examples/definitions. If I had seen the new "OK" icon in the icon descriptions at Safe Web, I would not have been suspicious of them ... they would have been "kosher" ... ...
It was the fact that the new "OK" was not listed as an "official" Safe Web icon that made me decide not to click on any of them. I thought about the problem with the .lnk files ... and my tinfoilhat turned into a helicopter beanie ... I am laughing when I say this ... "Danger! Danger Will Robinson!"
Just kidding ... but it is not beyond the realm of possibility that Norton Safe Web might be targeted ... so, we come here to check things out ... thanks to all of you regulars who have been here for months/years and spend your time helping others.
Just tried to send a Reply and it stalled out ... will try again.
Thanks AllenM for asking Symantec to update the page showing the "official" Norton Safe Web icons. When I did not see the "OK" symbol listed, I thought of the recent hacking of .lnk files ...
As we might say down here in the South, 'If it ain't on the official list, I ain't clickin' on it' ... (g)
Wow! The post I thought was hung up and wouldn't finish the green progress bar not only got posted while I was typing another, but you had already replied !!
Next time I will check to see if a post actually made it first (g) ... and about Lost In Space ... yes, I watched them all way back there when I was a kid ... one of these days, I am going to have a bunch of disposable income and hit Amazon and Best Buy and get the whole lot of them (g) ... first on my list is all seven seasons of Voyager.
