Secure VPN Disconnects Automatically

Hello.

Recently, I noticed a bug in Norton and it occurs when the system goes into Idle Time. I've set the Idle Time in my Norton's settings to 10 minutes. When the system goes into the Idle Time, sometimes Secure VPN disconnects itself automatically. I'll attach a screenshot below. You can easily see that I ran LiveUpdate and left the PC more than 10 minutes before the VPN disconnection!

Please fix this bug. The VPN shouldn't be disconnected when the system is left by the user!

I have this problem also and although tried several ways to find out how the stop it, it carries on. Norton appear to be unable to sort the problem out and as mentioned, what other problems does Norton have that we are not aware of. I have therefore made the decision to not renew subscription and transfer to another antivirus supplier. NOT McAfee as this appears to be from the same manufacturer. (If not please let me know).

I just finished chatting with Norton representative and was told this often happens if the video graphics driver is not up to date.  I responded that my pc was only a few months old and doubted that would be an issue.  Their response was to update the driver anyway and see if that solves the problem??????

April 11 7:10MST, I just finished with a person on Live chat, here is part of the chat.

This is a product feature by design since the product is managed by Norton Dashboard, one place to manage all the important features. This product has multiple features and works on single platform that is the reason after every restart you should run the Norton Secure VPN manually.

This has been addressed to our engineering team and they are planning to get this upgraded.

When I asked when they mentioned COVID 19 as part of the reason for the delay. I suggested they should address the forums since it looks like people are being ignored.

Hope this helps someone.

Fully agree with @Johnie Davis 55

My first posting about this serious issue was made on March 20, 2020 and since that time I have read numerous reports of dissatisfaction with Norton's oversight and failure to repair! DOES NORTON EVEN READ THESE COMPLAINTS! IF SO, WHAT ARE THEY DOING TO ADDRESS THEIR VIOLATION FOR SELLING A INSECURE PRODUCT?

I've used Norton for 15 years and upgraded to their 360 Premium package specifically for the VPN service. I'm appalled to find out that the premiere addition of VPN and Life Lock over a year ago, is INSECURE and they know about it and have failed to make public announcement or fixed it! I'm now concerned about all my personal information entered for Life Lock being INSECURE as well. Somebody at Norton needs to RESPOND TO THIS ISSUE IMMEDIATELY! I'll be shopping their competitors and canceling my subscription if this issue isn't fixed soon!

BNT: that ("It makes me wonder if my other Norton 360 functions are having issues as well.") is a REALLY good point!

It makes sense that something could have gone awry when they integrated the function... but what doesn't make sense is that they didn't fixed it immediately. It's not as if the concept of having a task initiate upon 'wake-up' is a new idea.

@denheck. I totally agree

Peterweb: When it became an integrated product is when my VPN issues started. It makes me wonder if my other Norton 360 functions are having issues as well. Not sure I’d know if they were working intermittently or not, but assume they are. This VPN problem is extremely frustrating and annoying.

This VPN issue is a big deal.  I am already shopping for another product when my Norton subscription expires.

denheck:

Why does my VPN not stay on when used on my laptop, but is always on when use on my Galaxy Android cell?

See my post above. Mobile OS's use totally different code for the VPN than a Windows version.  Connection issues, and the VPN not staying on seems to have come along with the latest version of the VPN when it became embedded into the 360 product.

@ denheck : Join the Club ! :-)

Why does my VPN not stay on when used on my laptop, but is always on when use on my Galaxy Android cell?

It is frustrating to have to continually double check each time is start my day (and during the day) to turn on VPN again.

Help please

Thank you, Hugo. I was an IT person, too - but long since retired! I have gotten lazy about investigating/trying new products... always just easier to 'renew' and move on. But after this development (or lack thereof!), it's definitely worth the time to investigate another provider. Thanks for the info about McAfee! They'll be my first stop.

Nicole, I switched to Norton because there was a good offer when I recently bought a new PC and I like to switch from software from time to time (to learn other packages). I am myself a software developer (ERP systems) and I am faced with a lot of end-user issue's and we try to solve problems/enhance the software as much as possible to the requirements of the end-user. As you indicate yourself this VPN problem is going on for a long time, I see that quite some people have opened postings on this problem  and Norton doesn't see it a ('high') priority problem, you can start asking questions. On the one hand, 'publicity' is made to 'protect' your electronical (sorry for my English) data (have a look at the the Norton webpage) and on the other hand not solving the issue that this 'protection' is lost w/o notice, indication, ... doesn't show a lot of self respect from Norton, my idea ...

Hugo: why did you switch from McAfee? Was it a service issue? or just price??? I have ONLY ever used Norton, so I don't have experience with others to compare. I've always been happy with it, but am REALLY annoyed about this VPN issue. And given how long it's been going on, I think it's safe to say they do NOT consider it a priority - if they did, it would have been addressed. So... maybe time to finally look elsewhere. :(

Sounds like I have a similar issue. My Norton VPN disconnects every time I put my windows 10 computer to sleep or restart. Need to reconnect at wake up. I have 3 windows laptops in the house. Please share fix when available.

Well, this is then very pitty and even a 'design' error of Norton. Was working with Mcafee before and was MUCH better. I probably will switch back and for sure will not extend my subscription ...

The VPN is no longer a separate program, but is an embedded feature in the new Norton 360. So the only way to start it up is through the 360 program.

The Android version is a totally different code base due to the different OS's. So it is possible to have totally different operating characteristics.

Hi, same here. Looking around on this forum form many hours to find a solution (that the secure VPN is 'stopped'). Is there anybody that knows which executable 'Norton' is executing on the PC the 'start' the secure VPN. I was thinking on scheduling a windows task every 'X times' so I can be sure that the VPN is always 'active'. I have windows 10, checked several topics on this forum, tried to do what was explained but no result. Have to mention that the secure VPN is working fine on my Android GSM (cell phone, when I restart the phone, automatically secure VPN is running). 'Regedit' variables are fine (as I found on this on this forum). I also noted that this problem was all ready mentioned 1 year ago (but still not a solution has been provided). This is my first 'Norton' product, all working fine except this secure VPN. It can not be that the solution is so difficult to find.
