Background Tasks
Are there certain background tasks to be deactivated? Because the new Norton is frying the hard drive, although no scans or any other tasks are ordered. I already deactivated disk optimization and clean up.
Every time I make a pause (computer goes idle), Norton causes 100% disk usage and it renders the computer practically useless. It never stops and I have to restart.
Resource Monitor shows that Norton is scanning or working with a lot of files, but as I said, I didn’t order any scans, clean up or disk optimization No notifications about any threats, no items in quarantine either
. Multiple Processes
In Task Manager there are multiple processes for Norton 360 (NortonUI). Is this normal?
(I tried to upload a photo, but I got a message that there was an error and the photo couldn’t be uploaded)
Exclusions don’t really work
I noticed that Norton is working on files located in folders I already excluded from both scans and auto-protect… Are those exclusions some sort of a sham-feature or what?
Norton is now the worst ever, it is kind of a virus or malware. I would really appreciate any help,
I am really considering dumping this garbage for good.
.
I had most of that already done… (except community watch and data usage).
I just did it and rebooted… Everything was fine… I had to go and receive a package… It was a little over 10 minutes, so the computer became idle and Norton started doing the same old sh***…
.
Then I said this is it, I am uninstalling this garbage for good. There is a tool (you can download it here on Norton-Website) called “NRnR” (Norton Removal and Reinstall). I ran it, but it shows me an error (shocker), however Norton stopped frying the hard drive
Well, this could be it
Well at least it’s not just me having this problem.
Since I renewed my subscription at the beginning of September and Norton was updated to the latest version I have been plagued with slow startups due to Norton scanning my computer.
I have put the drive partitions in the Excluded List, have set Smart Scan, Quick Scan and Full Scan to Run Manually and still every time I start the computer Norton sticks a finger up to me and does a scan anyway, which takes ages and makes the computer unresponsive.
I never noticed this problem with the older version of Norton which I was using for 2 years.
Norton support has been a waste of time.
If it can’t be sorted out soon the only option I will have is to remove Norton and try something else.
Anyone any suggestions of what to try ?
Regards,
Nick.
PS Unable to upload photo showing all instances of NortonUI.exe in Resource Monitor - says there is an error !!!
Hello @user2850 Wow!
and v22.x did not do what v24.x is doing?
have you been able to do one Full Scan?
I wonder whether v24 is just trying to do (at startup) what it wants to do during Idle Time and with all that data…Wow!
And that’s not the only problem. For the second time this week when I started Norton this evening it reported “No active subscription on this device” and I had to enter the key again. Was OK in that respect this morning.
@Asem_Saleh Version 24xx and how it functions “under the hood” is basically an unknown at present. I can suggest a few settings to look at that may provide some changes if you are receptive to them. Please note that, the maximum time we can delay idle time out is 30 minutes. A suggestion on the product suggestions board to have the ability to disable it entirely seems prudent.
Disc optimization settings: I have mine set at disabled due to having SSD drives. Windows will perform trim and retrim on its own. Optimizing SSD’s will degrade their life span.
And lastly, preset scan settings. If you hover your mouse cursor near the “start” radio button on each section, a cog icon will appear. You can tailor settings for each scan there as you would like them done.
Had same issue with prolonged startup. I have always used fast startup and it was pretty fast. I uninstalled and reinstalled the new Norton and had the same issue. Spent a few more days working the issue and finally came to a solution. I simply started it up and waited for it to finish that process. I opened and closed a few programs then opened my duckduckgo and left it open. I shut down the system using hibernate, repeat, hibernate and it opened better that it did with fast startup. This is just a workaround until I can figure out the registry and take care of it that way. Oh yeah, my duckduckgo opened to this question when i started up again.
To the OP (and other users affected) : Have you tried turning on “Silent Mode” and just leaving it on all the time? I did that ages ago and it has truly minimized the arrogance of the product jumping at the first opportunity of an idle computer to do… whatever.
Silent Mode does not impede protection monitoring - if something hinky is encountered or downloaded, Norton still jumps on it. I too run all my scans manually according to my schedule or convenience. The only problem is the Silent Mode only stays on for 24 hrs and must be turned back on. But if you take note of when you first turn it on, stay close to the computer around that time (the next day) and just before it is scheduled to turn off, beat it to the punch and turn it off manually, then turn it back on again. If you let it lapse and time out on its own, then you probably get the same issue when the “awake” product starts running amok when idle.
Mind you, I am still using a much older product because I am also still running a much older OS, which I need for things that simply are incompatible with all the new garbage that has been shoved down our throats since Vista. For all I know, Symantec probably got rid of a good feature like Silent Mode to make sure people cannot hinder the resource-hogging and system-decimating arrogance of their “new and improved” products.
At any rate - if Silent Mode is still a feature you can access/utilize, give that a try. See if it binds and gags the bi†¢h that is Norton.
