Hello. What is your issue with SMB:BruteForce, is Norton alerting you? Do you have a screenshot to share for review? Is this on Wifi with a mobile device, PC?

SA

I rent and I am on the same wifi my landlord uses and who gave me access. I have been getting “SMB:BruteForce” warnings. Is it my landlord who is seeking access to my computers and passwords and, if so, will VPN be effective against it?

Norton is alerting me, next time it comes up will try to screen shot it.

Disconnect from that WiFi and restart your device. SMB:BruteForce is a forced attack to steal your credentials. Take that seriously and do not use that network.

PC Windows 11

Wow. So are you saying the source of the attack is probably my landlord?

Thank you. Since your landlord own the Wifi router and the service its providing. They may or may not know this is happening. Have you discussed this with the landlord?

SA

Not yet, but I shall. Thank you SoulAslum! I have been getting compromise password warnings! I think I shall work on changing them. Salam!

What I am saying is, your landlord may not have ever changed any of the default settings on their router or device their Internet provider gave them. If that is the case, there are lists by manufacturer and serial number on the dark web where people can use this Brute Force attack until they get the right combination for a specific router and then have control of that device. Talk to your landlord before all else, and DO NOT use that wifi network until they know what is going on. You and your landlord, may be being attacked at the same time.

SA

Thank you Soul! Here is the screen shot:

Do you have your Wifi network connection set to public or private? The private setting allows for your device to be discoverable on your local network where as setting to private won’t allow that. What version and build of Windows are you using?

SA

When connected to a Public network, the default configuration of Smart Firewall prevents commonly-used Windows services like file/printer sharing and remote desktops from functioning

Can’t edit my post above so here it is. Private network - more trusted, less things get blocked / Public network - less trusted, more things get blocked. My apologies for the typos. Been editing spam here on the forums for two days and cannot edit posts for another 4 hours.
