Incoming Spam is labeled [Norton Anti-Spam] but is not going to the junk mail box. I have rules set up for directing mail to certain folders and I suspect those rules are overriding the Anti spam but I don't know how to make the anti spam override the rules that I have.
What version of NIS 2010 do you have from Help & Support > About.
If you think you might have rules which is causing the mail not to go to the Norton Antispan folder then you will need to look through them. Are you finding these emails being stored in folders other than the Inbox? If so, this should make it easier to determine which rule is causing this.
You might want to go into Tools > Rules and Alerts in Outlook and clear the checkmark for all the rules. This will effectively disable them. If the problem stops then you know for sure that a rule in Outlook is causing it. If the behavior continues then we should look elsewhere.
The version is 17.7.0.12. I suspect it may be ther rules but the older version s of anti spam created a rule for the spam that always stayed at the top of the list.
Thanks for the update. Outlook will attempt to follow multiple rules so more than one rule can be applied to a single message.
I think the best way to make sure if this is the cause or not is to temporarily disable all the Outlook rules and see if the problem continues.
I had asked before if you are finding some of these messages in a different folder instead of your Inbox. Is this occurring or are the messages in question still in your Inbox?
The offending messages are ending up in different folders.
If the answer is the rules are doing this, the question then becomes how do I get the anti spam to take precedence over the rest of the rules as it did in previous version of NIS.
Double check that Antispam is turned on in NIS Network Settings. From your description it sure sounds like it is but just to double check...
Are you indicating that in prior versions of NIS that the Norton Antispam overrode an Outlook Rule which was in conflict?
I'm not sure if this is the way it is supposed to work but if you are indicating this is a change from previous behavior I will make an inquiry to Symantec and ask them to clarify what the proper behavior should be in such cases.
It would still help to first disable all the Outlook Rules and make sure this is truly the cause. It could be possible for something to have gong wrong with the installation of NIS. If the problem continues even after disabling all Outlook rules then we should proceed to uninstall NIS with use of the Norton removal tool and reinstall. More on that later if we get to that point.
I've done some more research and I do see an indication from a Symantec employee in another thread that Norton Antispam should take precedence over Outlook rules as you indicated.
Double check that not only is Antispam turned on in Network settings but also in Network settings click Client Integration and make sure that Outlook has a checkmark in the email clients section and in the address book section.
If this is already set correctly you could try disabling Outlook in the Client integration, save changes and then reenable it. If there is some problem with NIS this might also correct it.
I have NIS 2010, using outlook 2010 w/o any custom rules & I just received an email from paypal and norton marks it as spam, but it;s kept in the inbox. Antispam is enabled
Can you also check to make sure that the Norton Antispam folder is still present in Outlook? Also is your OS 32 or 64 bit?
Did you have a chance to check the settings I mentioned earlier? In particular checking that:
1. Antispam is turned on.
2. Checking client integration in Network settings and making sure that Outlook is enabled in both sections. If already on, please try to turn it OFF, then save changes. Then reenable Outlook and save changes again. After that shut down and re-launch Outlook.
3. It would also help to ascertain if temporarily disabling all Outlook rules allows things to work correctly.
4. Another test to try (this one is new). Temporariliy add one of your own email addresses to the Blocked list in NIS Antispam. You can do this from Network Settings > Antispam > Blocked List > Configure. Then send an email to that address and verify if the email gets moved to the Norton Antispam folder.
5. After testing #4, don't forget to add yourself back to the Allowed list in NIS. This will move your email address from the Blocked to the Allowed list. NIS will actually tell you that this email address is currently in the Blocked list and ask you to confirm if you want to move it to the Allowed list.
These will all give us data points to try and figure out why this is not working for you.
Cinek, can you try the same things? Except I guess #3 does not apply to you.
2. I don't have any client integration setting in network settings...
4. I have added one of my emails to blocked list - and it came straight to inbox. Norton didn't even show it as spam
5. Done
Hi Cinek,
Thanks for the update. I am a little confused on #2. Can you explain what you mean when you say you don't have any client integration settings in Network settings?
Office 2010 is not yet officially supported. Office 2010 32 bit will be supported at some point (probably soon) but 64 bit Office 2010 will not be supported initially even for NIS 2011.
At some point Office 2010 (e.g, Outlook 2010) will probably support 64 bit but there is no word from Symantec as to when that might be.
Currently, only Office 2007 and earlier is officially supported.
thanks, that explains that, but I'm still confused as to why I don't have the client integration option in settings :S
Hi Cinek,
I do know that some folks I've seen on the forum indicate varying degrees of success with NIS 2010 and Outlook 2010 32 bit but it is not yet officially supported in NIS 2010.
Do you have 64 bit Outlook 2010? If so, this is most likely why you don't see the Client Integration option. On my laptop where I do not have Office installed I also don't have this option.
As the original poster on this, I'd like to report my findings. As it was suggested, the rules were overriding the anti spam settings for some silly reason. However, each e-mail that comes from a blocked sender is automaticially tagged with [Norton antispam]. I created a rule at the top of the iist that moves messages with [Norton antispam] in the subject into the junk mail folder and also told it to stop processing more rules and problem solved, I think.
My old version of NIS created this rule automatically. I guess you don't get what you pay for anymore. By the way, this in NIS 2010 and MS Outlook 2007 with a Windows 7 OS.
Can you clarify which Outlook you have? Your original post mentions Outlook 2007 which is also what I have. I have never seen a default rule installed by NIS in Outlook 2007 and yet my antispam has always worked properly, including recently.
But I have seen other posts talk about this default rule so I asked a colleague of mine and he indicated that he believes this default rule is specific to Outlook Express.
Do you have the regular version of Outlook 2007 or Outlook Express?
