Issue abstract:

Startup Scan ALWAYS aborted because of “Keyboard Error”

Detailed description:

Every time I try to perform a Startup Scan the procedure is blocked with 0 files or folder or anything checked because of a “Keyboard Error“. I work on a Windows 11 machine (natively installed, recieved as such from factory), wich is a Laptop, therefore NO EXTERNAL KEYBOARD installed or plugged in ever. I already checked the keyboard driver and it’s updated according to Windows. NOTE: the machine came with a McAfee antivirus installed, which I uninstalled in order to install Norton (for which I had a licence from another Laptop that I don’t use anymore due to machine total hardware failure…).

Hello @PedoneRosso
Did you run the McAfee Removal Tool specifically, or did you only use the Windows “Add/Remove Programs” menu?

Are you logged in as a Standard User or as the Administrator on this laptop?

I had to use the specific removal tool, the system forced me to.

And I’m logged in as the Administrator.

Hello @PedoneRosso
Hmm…then I’m head scratch why…

And your W11 machine runs Fast Startup = disabled?

Did you try Norton 360 Troubleshooting?
Reset to Default | Repair Norton
Note: Reset to Default resets Cloud Backup

Maybe, refresh (clean install) your Norton 360 install and then…if “no joy”.

The “Keyboard Error” during a Norton 360 Startup Scan typically occurs because of a conflict between the scan’s pre-boot environment and your hardware or recent system changes. This can often be resolved by clearing corrupted files or performing a clean reinstallation of the software.

  • Perform a Full Restart: Do not just “Shut Down” and turn the PC back on, as Windows Fast Startup can prevent the system from fully resetting the environment needed for a startup scan. Select Restart from the Power menu.
  • Run System File Checker (SFC): Corrupted Windows system files can cause pre-boot errors.
  1. Search for cmd in the Start menu, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
  2. Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  3. Once finished, run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth.
  • Uninstall Recent Windows Updates: If this error started immediately after a Windows update, that update may be incompatible with Norton’s boot-time environment. Navigate to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history > Uninstall updates and remove the most recent entry.

================================

Startup Scan is an advanced tool that runs before the operating system fully loads to catch deeply embedded malware. Because it runs in a simplified environment, it is highly sensitive to:

  • Hardware Incompatibility: If your keyboard uses non-standard drivers that aren’t loaded in the pre-boot state, the scan may trigger a “Keyboard Error” and abort.
  • Failed Updates: A partial Norton or Windows update can leave the boot-time scanning engine in an unstable state.
