I’m using Norton 360

mpmahen,

1. Please tell us the Norton Safety Minder Version.  You can find it by right clicking on the Norton Safety Minder icon in the System tray and selecting About Norton Safety Minder.

2. What is the version number of Norton 360?

3. Do you still know what anti-virus product you installed prior to Norton 360?

Thanks,

Katie

Hello,

I have the same problem. I just installed Safety Minder. I also have Norton 360.

On both of the family computers, surfing is extremely slow. The kids try to access a page like Facebook, and it doesn't even display the whole page. If they try to go to another site, the browser (Firefox) seems inactive. If they close Firefox, and try to restart it, they cannot. They also can't click on any computer programs after this happens. It's like the computer has slowed to a crawl.

None of these problems occurred until I installed Safety Minder two days ago. If I log in and they use the browser "unmonitored," the problem is gone.

Probably, if I turn off web monitoring, the problem would go away, but that defeats the whole purpose of the Safety Minder!

Do you have any suggestions?

Slow response when running Noton Safety Minder Version 1.1.5.15, online framework version and database store both at version 1.1.5.14.

Norton Internet Security 2010, no other previous virus protection programs?

Please assist urgently....

Hi Zandwich and driesf1,

When something like this happens, it generally is the compatibility issue with other Security products. You mentioned  you have Norton 360 and Norton Internet Security 2010 installed, and NSM is compatible with them.  Do you remember what security products you had before Norton 360 and NIS 2010, or is is possible you have other Security products installed on the PCs too?   Please check out the link "Using Norton Safety Minder with other Security Products" located at upper-right hand corner of page http://community.norton.com/norton/board?board.id=OnlineFamily to make sure you really don't have a product on the list installed.

Thanks,

Katie

Hi Katie,

Nope, this computer came with Norton 360 installed on it. The other computer once had Zone Alarm on it but it was thoroughly uninstalled (according to special instructions from PC magazine) before installing Norton 360.  One computer is old, and the other is fairly new. One is running Vista, and the other Win XP. They have no other security products installed.

Both computers had no issues with browsing until I installed the parental control software.

Any other ideas?
Thanks.

zandwich,

Please disable Norton Safety Minder (Click on Norton Safety Minder icon in the System Tray and select Disable Norton Safey Minder) to see if the issue still exists.

I understand one of the PC is Vista and the other is XP.  Could you give us some details, like is the Vista with 64-bit or 32 bit.  The XP has Service Pack 2 or 3?

What version of Norton 360 do you have?

Thanks,

Katie

Hi Katie,

Thanks for continuing to help!

I tried disabling Norton Safety Minder, and the issue went away. Also,  as another test, I changed my settings to stop monitoring web sites and the issue went away. So this problem of slowing down the browser is directly related to whatever Safety Minder is doing to record my kids' web sites and send that info to the Safety Minder. I have FIOS so it's not the connection speed that is slow.

My Norton 360 version is 2.5.0.5. The Vista computer is 64-bit and is up to date with SP2. The XP computer is on SP3 and is 32-bit.

I am surprised that lots of people don't have this issue, since I'm having it with two very different computers.

zandwich,

I just sent you a PM.  You could access the message by clicking on the icon_notes_mail.gif icon in the upper right hand corner of the page.

Hi

I am reading this thread with interest it is the same problem I am having on two seperate computers.

One is Vista Business Vaio 13"

the other is an older Windows XP LG

Both have zone alarm as the AVG program.

As sonn as I disable the windows exporer monitoring the surfing returns to normal speed. I also live in a coountry that use an online proxy to restrict websites

Is there a work around with this problem?

thanks

I do not have a workaround. At the moment I have disabled web monitoring so my kids can actually use the computer.

I am still hoping there's some setting/change I can make. Also I am thinking of finding a different brand of parental control software :(

A norton e'ee has confirmed on the other thread that nsm is not a parental control app as any child regardless of age is allowed to disable nsm at their leisure. The norton e'ee stressed that this disabling of the nsm s/ware was an integral element of it as it allowed parents to spk to their 5 yr olds and ask them why they viewed indecent material even though norton was supposed to protect us. I too am chking other true parental control apps, ones that protect my child at the very least!

To eliminate whether there was a browser issue, I re-enabled web monitoring and had one kid try Internet Explorer instead of Firefox. The problem is there regardless of the browser.

So the problem's not caused by the browser or the windows version.

Had to disable web monitoring again so my kid could do homework.

zandwich,

By definition there has to be some time taken to lookup websites to be sure they are within the policy you have configured, however that time should be small enough that it would be unnoticeable. In your case however it seems that it is very noticeable.

Since you tried both browsers I am reluctant to believe that this is a Firefox plugin incompatibility or IE plugin incompatibility.

Do you have any other parental control or firewall software running either on your gateway (router) etc that may be blocking the Norton Safety Minder from actually retrieving the information it needs.

There have been cases where the ISP (in the case I am citing it was a non-USA one) where they were blocking our requests to get the category of the sites being surfed. This would cause a timeout and eventually slow down browsing.

Can you tell me which country you are using the software in?

Matt

Hi Matt,

Thanks for trying to help. I am in the U.S. and I have FIOS.

I have no other parental control software, and no other anti-virus software other than Norton.

However, I have configured the router to block certain sites and keywords. Could this be the problem? (I'm very reluctant to turn that off to test, because it's a real pain to set that up on the router.)

Thanks,

Zandwich

Hmm,

I understand your reluctance to turn that off, however the reasons I stated earlier where we have to go and check each site may be having trouble getting through your router rules.

Does the software actually block the correct categories based on your policy you have set up?

Is there a reason you would need to continue with the router config with NSM installed?

Matt

bretblin.

Thanks for your inquiry.  Norton Safety Minder is not compatible with ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 7.0 or its earlier versions.

Please check out the link "Using Norton Safety Minder withother Security Products" located at upper-right hand corner of page http://community.norton.com/norton/board?board.id=OnlineFamily for details.
