Transferring subscription from old to new computer - choice not given on instruction page

Hello all,

I recently bought a new computer because my old one died.  The old one has Norton Antivirus 2010 with Antisypware on it that is good until 8/11.  The new one has a trial of Norton...something.

I went to the page that walked me through how to move a subscription from an old to new computer and it had a lot of different download options...but none of them were for the Norton Antivirus 2010 with Antisypware.

Here is that page:

http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080514162318EN&entsrc=VirtuOZ

I do have the disc and it is called a "System Builder Edition" and I also have the product code.

What do I do now?  I am tempted to just insert the disc into the new computer and use the old product code but is that the right thing to do?

Thanks for any help.

Lisa

Hi Allen,

Here are my responses:

Welcome to the Norton Community. We need to know what product came on your new computer. It could be Norton Antivirus (NAV), Norton Internet Security (NIS) or Norton 360 (N360).

***NIS

It makes a difference since your product key is for NAV and the key cannot be used on the other products. We also need to know the version from Support > About of your trial Norton software.

***18.5.0.125

Also what OS and SP (service pack) do you have and is it 32 or 64 bit?

***Windows 7 and....SP??  It is a new Gateway that just came out 2 weeks ago.  The date on the Norton is 11/1/10 so a very recently built computer.

***64

Do you know how many computers your NAV subscription is good for? You can check this from your Norton Account.

***Both state 1.

Be sure to check how many activations your Norton account shows before proceeding below. You will need to contact Customer Service and let them know your old computer is no longer available and they will add one activation for NAV back onto your account. I would recommend doing this before proceeding.

*** OK - so how do I contact CS?  Via email or the phone?

***What is a little frustrating is that the page that I linked to below looked like it was on the right path...ie....they asked me if my old computer died and I said "yes" and that I wanted it put onto the new one....but then was not given a choice for NIS....but I guess that would be trading apples for oranges.

The most current version of NAV is NAV 2011 which you are fully entitled to at no additional charge.

If your new computer comes with NAV 2011 already then you can simply enter your product key from your current subscription (also found in your Norton account) by clicking on the "Renew" button at the bottom and entering your product key in the box provided. If asked for your email address be sure to give it the email address which corresponds to your Norton Account.

If your new computer came with something other than NAV, you should download the Norton removal tool from here.

***Ok....but if I understand you correctly, since I purchased a NAV....but my computer came with NIS....then I should do NOTHING now.....not until I contact CS.... correct?

One other question....which is better?  NAV or NIS?  NIS sound more comprehensive.

Thank you for your help!

Lisa

Hi Lisa,

My apologies it looks like I forgot to include the link for Customer Service.

http://us.norton.com/support/dtree.jsp

Chat is the best and fastest option. OK, since you have NIS on your new computer you will need to follow my instructions earlier to uninstall this and run the Norton removal tool, followed by installing NAV 2011 from the link I gave you.

In response to your question about which is better. NIS is definitely better and includes a two-way firewall which NAV does not have. NIS also includes Identity Safe which safe and securely stores login information for websites in which you have a user account. However, since the product keys are not interchangeable I'm thinking you should stay with NAV for now and when your subscription nears renewal time you can always post back here and we can help you with changing over to NIS.

If your NAV subscription is good for only 1 computer and your Norton account shows that you still have one available you should not need to contact customer service. Be sure that it shows 1 activation remaining because there is a column entitled Protection For which shows how many computers you are entitled to install NAV on. I am surprised that it would show one activation remaining since you had NAV installed on the old computer so please double check this.

If you wish you could ask Customer Service if they can do anything to offer a discount for switching over to NIS instead of NAV. If they do this for you then they should issue you a new product key for NIS which you can then enter by clicking Renew at the bottom of the main NIS window and then enter the new product key in the box provided. This will only work if Customer Service gives you a new product key for NIS.

Hope this clarifies.

Best wishes.

Allen

I asked:  One other question....which is better?  NAV or NIS?  NIS sound more comprehensive.

Sorry to bother you with a question that I could investigate on my own.  I see that NIS is double the price of NAV.  Therefore, it is more comprehensive.

The question still remains regarding contacting CS.

I suppose that I can also discuss with CS an upgrade to NIS if I choose to do so which I probably won't.  So...if I stick with NAV, is the answer to let the free 60 day trial for NIS run out and then re-download NAV for the remainder of my sub time?

Thanks!

It is also ironic that you asked about switching to NIS if Customer Service can work out a deal for you. I just edited my previous post to include this possibility. :smileywink:

Thanks!

Lisa

HI Lisa,

Please see above.

Best wishes.

Allen

P.S. At such time as you do change over to NAV, be sure to check Windows Firewall (unless you have another 3rd party firewall) and ensure that it gets turned back on after you have uninstalled NIS. You can check the status of the firewall by typing "windows firewall" in the start menu search box.

The windows firewall should not be ON while NIS is installed since NIS comes with its own firewall.

***OK - I assume that I should just leave NIS for 59 days and then remove it and then install NAV 2011 - using my 2010 product key.

***Just so I understand......if I had just followed the prompts on the page that I originally linked to that takes me to a NAV 2011 Download page....and tried to DL the 2011 version of NAV with a 2010 product key.....what would have happened since I would not have known to UNinstall NIS?

Lot of computer comes up preinstalled with norton. Looks like your pc comes up with nis and you bought nav. So never mind remove nis first with removal tools then install nav. All instruction are mention in allenm post

Very nice...and complete responses, Allen.  Thank you very much!

I ask a lot of questions so that I can learn...and not keep bugging Support people!  :>)

Hi Lisa,

You are most welcome. One of the things that I love most about the Norton Community is the number of folks here (users like yourself) who have a true empathy and want to help others when they can. It is what got me "hooked" on the Norton Community. :smileyhappy:

Best wishes and you know where to reach us if you need anything.

Allen

I remember the stress involved with setting up my first computer.  There were no forums like this to help people. I  remember practically being in tears...feeling like I was sitting in the middle of the ocean......in a little row boat with no oars. It was an awful feeling.  Then....to try and get some help via the phone?!?!  Makes me break out in hives just thinking about it!

These forums, and folks like you and everyone else who gives of their time.....a true sanity-saver!

Quick question....when downloading things, there is always a choice of "run" or "save".  I usually click "run" but is that what I would do with these instructions?:

Download NAV 2011 from here.

Should I click "run" or "save"?  I am assuming "run"?  Then I assume it will give me a choice of installing or not.  This is where it gets confusing because you mention "installing" it later.

"Run" and "Save" are confusing to me. Now that I think of it...maybe I should click "save" and not "run".

Then uninstall the Norton software and reboot your computer. Run the removal tool and reboot your computer.

Install NAV 2011 which you downloaded before.

I prefer to save because to save the installer on your hdd so that in future if you format your pc you dont need to download it again

Hi Lisa,

I generally choose to save the file to my computer because you will have it then if you need it again sometime and won't have to download the same file again.

You can save it to a convenient location and then just double click to run it when you get to that point.

Best wishes.

Allen

Ok - thanks to both of you.

Finding it again is what always worried me but you covered it here:

You can save it to a convenient location

Whenever I click "save"....I forget to pay attention to where it went and then have no idea where to find it!  I am still working on being computer literate.....

Lisa

Check one time where you download. Or i give you suggestion to download it on your desktop where you can see everytime.

Hi Lisa,

I have a separate folder called "Install Archives" where I save all my files I download. I then create sub-folders underneath this to represent what it is. For example "NAV 2011" and then save the downloaded file there.

It keeps things nice and organized without cluttering your desktop. :smileywink:

Best wishes.

Allen

I am using internet download manager which is create a folder name download in my document autometically . :stuck_out_tongue:

Great suggestions from both of you.  Who knew that  I would learn so much tonight!  :>)
