I am going to try and keep this polite, despite my ire and fury at finding Norton is living amongst the worst of the worst and overriding the choices of the end user, when that situation should NEVER have been allowed to exist and goes against the very nature of the ability to SWITCH SETTINGS TO "OFF".
----------------------------- THE PROBLEM
-----------------------------
So, Norton decides it wants to run Anti-Virus scans when it deems fit, DESPITE the settings I have.
I have ALL scanning options OFF, and, other than those settings I require to be on (firewall et-al) everything is set to off until I CHOOSE to run a scan, which is NOT when the effing software **thinks** it wants to run a scan.
Even worse is the "I am going to run when you boot into your OS scan". Talk about slow down load times!!!!
----------------------------- A LITTLE BACKGROUND
-----------------------------
I have a specific day of the week to go through my computers (I own several) and scan them with various software products to detect anything untoward. I therefore DO NOT have ANY interest in ANY software that IGNORES THE SETTINGS I CHOOSE and runs a damn scan anyway. I do this BECAUSE I DO NOT HAVE THE TIME TO DO IT AT ANY OTHER POINT IN THE WEEK!
I make the choices, not the effing software. These un-commanded scans are the singular reason I ripped out competitor software and now I find Norton software engineers think they know better than me and build the software in such a way as to ignore the effing settings set by the user (Yes, I know WTF I am doing with my machines and how to effing to look after them, I am not an effin idiot).
----------------------------- BIT OF A RANT
-----------------------------
Yes, I am beyond peed off at this, to the point of ripping the whole lot out of every device and DEMANDING a refund because the software IS NOT PERFORMING AS IT SHOULD DUE TO IGNORING THE SETTINGS NOT TO SCAN AND NOT TO SCAN ON A SCHEDULE AND IS THEREFORE NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE.
THIS IS NOT A "THE SOFTWARE DOING ITS JOB ISSUE", THIS IS A "THE SOFTWARE COMPLETELY IGNORING THE SETTINGS AND CAUSING UNDUE STRESS ON MY SYSTEMS AT THE WORST POSSIBLE TIMES AND SLOWING MY WORKFLOW DOWN DUE TO HAVING NO CONTROL TO STOP THE SCANS, THEREFORE HAVING TO WALK AWAY FROM THE MACHINE UNTIL THE UN-COMMANDED SCANS ARE COMPLETE"
----------------------------- The Question/s
-----------------------------
Is there ANY way to stop these un-commanded scans from occurring and the software actually working as it is supposed to?
This is NOT just an issue on MacOS either, these un-commanded scans are running on Windows and Android too, despite the settings.
----------------------------- WHAT I WILL NOT BE DOING
-----------------------------
I AM NOT going to uninstall, then reboot, to reinstall the software. Been there, done that, nothing changes, not even the broken VPN (yet another issue that makes the software NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE.
I AM NOT Going to "Supply contact email or telephone number" to Support. Been there, done that, been hounded for months afterwards. Nope, NOT going to happen!
I AM NOT Going to contact first level support. They are next to useless, reading only from scripts and trying to double talk their way out of the conversation or try to make you out to be the idiot when they do not understand what you are talking about.
Quick Scans are considered a priority item. There is no user setting to override this. The number of new threats that arrive daily make it important to run these scans frequently to catch anything that might have been undetectable prior to the latest virus signature update.
Only when the settings are set to "allow" that to occur. Given the options available to stop that, which I have used, NO SCANS should run Either on Win Or Mac.
When those methods employed to stop the "quick scan" process are enacted, the software SHOULD NOT RUN.
Android Norton scan SHOULD NOT RUN until commanded to. The fact it DOES run is 1) Killing my Battery every time it runs, 2) Removing my right of choce as to when scans run (as well as everyone else's choice!) 3) stopping me using my device as it was intended to be used.
@ bjm_ If you are "not familiar with Norton 360 for Mac" as you say, why effin comment on it? Why even consider commenting on it?
It is NOT HELPFUL, it DOES NOT SOLVE THE ISSUE, NOR DOES IT EXPLAIN why Norton runs uncommanded scans against the settings is is supposed to abide by.
TO ANYONE ELSE READING THIS POST,
The fact that this behaviour is mirrored across THREE DIFFERENT PLATFORMS (Android/Mac/Win) tells me this is a NORTON SOFTWARE ISSUE and the answer lays within finding a way stop these uncommanded scans and putting an end to this nonsense of the software ignoring every choice the end user makes. Often choices are based on sound reasoning and specific circumstances, much as my own settings are. For the software to effectively stick up its middle finger and shout "Eff you" by scanning anyway is just a symptom of a much, much deeper problem.
My Windows machines only runs automatic Quick Scan.
Norton should automatically do a Quick Scan following each virus definition update. You will get this alert if a scan has not run in the past three days. This could be because your PC was off for that time, or possibly you have the Norton Idle Time Tasks setting set so high that the computer was never idle long enough to begin the scan. Set the Idle Time to one minute so that Norton can get cracking on the scan and other tasks as soon as the PC is idle.
Quick Scans are considered a priority item. If they have not had an opportunity to run after a few days (3 days, I believe), a Quick Scan will run automatically. There is no user setting to override this.
As Regards my (partial) comment above of "<snip>to the point of ripping the whole lot out of every device and DEMANDING a refund </snip>" that is how I am looking at the situation, it is not necessarily the route I wish to take if I can resole the Un-commanded scans.
I wish to resolve the un-commanded scans if I can, if not, refund is the OLR (Option of Last Resort).
