My OS is Windows XP and iā€™m running norton antivirus 2008.

I cannot access any pages on the internet with the computer, when I open explorer, it either says that it cannot open the search page or it will load a blank page, or it loads a page not found. I have has all three things happen depending on the address I am entering

redwee,

When did this start?

Starting last night, Microsoft released a massive Windows Security Update. Could that be the message you are getting: "The computer must be restarted before updating can continue. Would you like to restart now?"

This has been going on for about a month now, the message comes up everytime I start/restart my computer.

This should not affect redwee Internet Connection, though.

Redwee: Have you tried my Steps/suggestions?

I have ran my virus scan but it comes up clean, any ideas?

Which program is prompting the error message requesting the restart for updates to continue? Norton?

So there hasn't been a update for over a month now? and your browser is functioning properly?

What firewall do you have installed? That could be the problem

I cannot tell which program is prompting the message, that's why I think it is a virus, it shows up as soon as the computer is started and does not give any other information, like what updates it is trying to do.

I am unable to access any intenet content from that computer, however, I link into it through gotomypc, so I know i have some sort of an internet connection

All of my programs are working correctly except for Norton and the Internet Explorer, I have the Norton firewall only

Please try my suggestions as soon as you can.

You can Download the V.D.s on to a C.D. and insert that C.D. in to the computer where you are having problems.

Using a computer that has internet access, download the FREE version of Malwarebytes.  Copy that onto a flash drive or CD then install on the problem computer. Once installed, physically disconnect from the internet (pull the plug) then try to run the program in Safe Mode.  It is generally recommended to update the program once installed, but with no internet connection that won't work.

This is a reliable program that does not run in the background, but only when you call upon it to scan.

My norton is unable to connect to the server or internet for any updates, however I know I have an internet connection. My computer does not register that i have a connection, I cannot user internet explorer, however, I can connect to this computer remotely with gotomypc. I also get an error message every time the computer starts that states "The computer must be restarted before updating can continue. Would you like to restart now?"

I have ran my virus scan but it comes up clean, any ideas?

I apologize; I'm a bit confused by this last post. You mention that you have Norton AntiVirus 2008 earlier in this thread, and here you post that you have the Norton Firewall only. Are you referring to the "Internet Worm Protection" component of Norton AntiVirus 2008, or an older Norton product Norton Personal Firewall? Or do you have Norton Internet Security 2008 installed?

The reason I ask is because Internet Worm Protection is an Inbound Firewall only, it does not restrict traffic out of your computer. Could it be that your Windows Firewall is enabled? Or possibly another program is retricting access?

I'm sorry, I meant the only firewall my computer is running is through norton, I do not have norton internet security, it is just the antivirus software. I did double check my windows firewall and it is turned off.

What is you O.S.?

Download Virus Definitions from this Web Link and then do a Full System Scan in Safe Mode (http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/defs.download.html); make sure all boxes are checked in the Manual Scanning section of your Security Product, which can be found in the Security Product Options.

If you still get the Error after doing this and no Viruses, Spyware or Other Threats were Detected and Removed, Post back here.

I was able to run the scan in safe mode today and no viruses or other threats were detected. Still having the same issues.

Even though it is called "Norton AntiVirus", it does contain a In-bound-only Firewall, which could be the problem.

Could you confirm how long you have had this problem?  How did things run before this problem started, e.g. did you have any problems regarding to this problem or did things run normally?

No mention if you Downloaded and Installed the Latest Virus Definitions via the Web Link; did you do this before you Ran the Scan?  Just confirm what Scan it was, i.e. Quick Scan or Full System Scan.

Yes, I was able to put the current virus definitions on that computer and I ran a full system scan
