Using the Symantec Recovery Disk (SRD)

In a recent post to recover My Computer to a new hard drive, I was told to use my Symantec Recovery Disk (SRD). I looked at a link on Symantec’s Web page on the use of the SRD.  I use Ghost 15 and that disk is my SRD.

The Web page says: “Before you start using the Symantec Recovery Disk, make sure that it contains all the necessary device drivers that you may need in recovery environment.”

How can I determine if the disc supplied by Norton has all the necessary device drivers?  Or should I not worry about that and assume it will work?

I can say that I recently used the SRD to recovery My Computer to my current hard drive in my computer and it worked.  Should that tell me I am okay and it will work if I need to recover My Computer to a new hard drive?

If you used it before and it worked to recover your system, then it already has the correct drivers required to recover your system.

Hello Red –

From the response, it appears my SRD should be okay.  However, it would be helpful if I did know what drivers are on my SRD disk.  I don’t know if you can help, but when I boot the SRD, I was unable to find a folder DRIVER VALIDATION.  I went through some SRD options and in their search box I typed DRIVERVALIDATION.EXE and the response said “not a valid file.”

I could not post any screen shots when in the SRD mode.

Jerry8A,

I'll go with Dave's reply. Unless you have a very 'different' system the drivers on the CD should be able to power your system.

Keep us posted

Driver validation is run while in Windows, not the Recovery Environment. While in Windows, insert the CD and browse to the folder on the CD.

Hello Red –

Sorry, I misunderstood the location of the folder.  The below shows the content of the folder.  I had expected to see the drivers that were on the CD.  It only shows what is not.

The following devices do not have drivers in the Symantec Recovery Disk.

WAN Miniport (ATW)

A detailed information about these devices is given below

Description           : WAN Miniport (ATW)

Class                       : Net

Class Guid              : {4d36e972-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

Hardware Id          : WANATW

Hardware Id          : WANATW

My concern is this:

The post response says since the SRD worked okay when I used it to recover My Computer on my current hard drive, it should be okay if I used it on a new unformatted hard drive.

My thinking was I would have all necessary device drivers already on my current hard drive when I recovered My Computer and so it would not be a problem using the SRD.  But on a new hard drive with no device drivers on it, that would not be true.  Hence, I would need those drivers from the SRD.

Your comments please.

You don't need to concern yourself about miniport drivers.

I think you are confused about the drivers for a new drive. If you restore a Ghost image to a new drive, the image already contains the drivers for your hardware. When you boot your PC, it should act just like it did when you made the image.

That being said,, there are a few things that are not included in the image by design of Microsoft such as Windows restore points, Windows update history, etc. Look at THIS POST for more information.

BTW, A cold backup does not skip these items in the backup as far as I know.

Thanks Red for the help.
