Dear Symentec.
Can any one help me? I am currently using NIS 2008 with version 15.06. I understand that users can update to version 15.5. (Which Live Update cannot perform).
My concern are :-
If I update to 15.5, does it caused more harm than good. Considering that there are so much issues with the toolbar.
On the other hand, what are the benefits to "update" to version 15.5 from 15.0, besides the unpredictible toolbar issue. Does it improve detection or speed up scan, stability or what?
Can anyone help to let us understand what are the benefits of updating?
Thank you.

Hi Floating_Red,
As I recall, you got the update to Norton Internet Security 15.5 from HERE; please see this post to refresh your memory.
The Norton Confidential Update was for Firefox 3. Please see the Firefox 3 thread for more information. Thanks!
I installed the version 15.5 (from a link here). It worked like a charmed. Albeit, without the Norton toolbar for FF3. But that is quite okay.
I noticed that 15.5 scan a little faster and is "look" more stable.
I am glad I did update.
P/S:- Just wondered why LiveUpdate could not update to the latest "engine" 15.5.
Thanks

I understand. The update to 15.5 is a large update, which would take a very long time for slow-speed connections to download automatically.

Dear Mr Weiss,
Thank you. But I was not aware the NIS has a new "version" until I visited this forum. Symentec should have some noticed in their website for user to "locate" and "download to update" a new update. (ie :- Scan Engine Version, Scan Number, build...etc). That way users at least know that they have the latest engine and do not have to worry if their engine is outdated.
Thank you.
Symantec,
I found out in this forum by chance that there is a new NIS2008 version 15.5 available at www.symantec.com/newnis with the download file NIS081550.exe .
Questions:
- Is this an international version or only an English version? (I need a German version)
- Will all my settings (identity safe, firewall rules, etc. ) be retained or do I have to do them all again?
- Why is there no notification by Symantec whatsoever that this new version exists? An e-mail would be fine, otherwise at least the Symantec support pages should clearly state this information - not hidden deep in some thread of the forum.
Many Thanks

Dear Papageitaucher,
Hi, that was what I have been wanting Symentec to answer. Apparently, no luck. See if you can get the answer from Mr Tony Weiss. Good Luck.
Thank you.
If the reason for the separate download is that the fie is too large, then the best way to announce the new build would be to have a message pop up in liveupdate with a link to the download.

Hello,
I did get the Norton Internet Security Update from LiveUpdate.
I would also like an answer from symantec as to why there is no mention of this Update either on the Web Site or via e-mail. Customers, like myself, should be made aware of this by either one - or both - of these methods.
Dear all,
If you ever get any Symantec's customer surveys, please do mentioned about the updates of scan engines.
Symentec should inform users of the new engines. (ie:-15.06 to 15.50).
This is very critical, according to an article I read (sometime ago), it mentioned that it is critical to have updated scan engines.
Thank you
I hardly ever check the forums. In this case, I’m glas I did or I wouldn’t have known about the update available. Makes you wonder how many people are uaing an outdated version? If the download is too large for liveupdate (and I find that hard to beleive with most people having broadband these days) then Symantec should at least have a message that pops up when you’re running liveupdate with a link to the download.

Do a search on [German] in the search box up top left and it will find you a number of messages about obtaining the German version of NIS 2008 .50 -- read them all since at the last time I checked the one in Tony W's message led to another file -- he subsequently said he was chasing his German colleagues to get the newest NIS 2008 there.
PS Here's a link to a later message I had not seen giving a Digital River link to download the German version of 1550
Dear huwyngr,
As per my reply to you as per another thread. Symentec should inform users of the updates (15.5) so that users do not have to hunt high and low for it.
I know that version 15.5 is too large for LiveUpdate. But Symentec could offer a link via their website to download and install, instead of users seeking this forum for those information.
I hope Tony Weiss get the message and Symentec can change.
Thank you
howdy,
usually for an "inline" release like this that requires a new install we will notify you from within the product. this would look like a notification message coming from the systray with a link for you to follow. for 15.5, we've been working out a couple of issues and it has recently gotten to the point where we are comfortable expanding its distribution. before the FF3.0 issue, there was no big driver to push everyone to 15.5 so given this and the issues we were working on, we decided to be less aggressive with announcing the new build. when someone had an issue that was resolved by 15.5, they received it but otherwise it did not see much circulation while we worked out the kinks with the build. truthfully, i had the new build on my own laptop waiting to be installed and i waited until i had the FF3.0 issue myself before upgrading.
hope this helps,

Dear Dave,
Howdy to you too.....Thank you for your reply.
In a user point of view, having an updated version of AV is extremely important, whether or not if it actually help to fight malware but it certainly gives the user a sense of confident that one is using the latest version. (ie:- Version 15.5 instead of 15.06).
Most users do not care if there are limited changes between version, users are wants the latest.....considering that we are talking about security products.
I have been using version 15.5 for the last 1week, and I can tell you that it is certainly faster the version 15.06. It scan faster, boot up faster and feels lighter. I think Symentec should have given 15.5 release to mass regardless if it support FF3.
Therefore, my question is whether or not Symentec will "inform" users if there are any other "updates" (eg:- version 15.5 & higher), in the future?
Hopefully, Symentec can give us our 2 cents worth and not let users "hunt" for updates to new versions again.
Thank you for your time.
Thanks, huwyngr
One question still open, are my current settings (identity safe, firewall, etc. ) kept or do I have to do them all over when I install 15.5 ?
Papageitaucher
Dear Dave,
P/S :- Going back to my last posting to you. You'll find that I am not the only user who are concern about SYMENTEC NOT INFORMING USERS OF NEW UPDATED VERSION.....I think there are at least 10-15 users that are requesting the same.
Please for the sack & safety of users.....please let us know (whether or not if Symentec plans to inform users of new version updates in the near future??).
Also, the administors should informed others users that there is a Thread about it. So that others can read and post here. Or can the subject matter be retitled.
Thank you once again.
hi,
i understand your concern, but 15.5 is a release that is has only very minor functionality improvements and contains mostly bug fixes.it did not have any significant security improvements-- if it did we would have made you aware of it right away (and we can typically do these changes solely through LiveUpdate). and while i'm glad the product feels ligher and faster on your system, i don't think most people will experience this (we didn't make any real changes in this build that should noticeably affect system performance). as i mentioned in my last post, we ran into a couple conflicts with 15.5 that could pose serious problems for our customers. so when we knew someone had a problem that was addressed by 15.5, we issued them the new bits but did not want to cause more harm than good by pushing the build before we had resolved the conflicts we'd ran into.
sorry for the confusion,
--dave
Dear Dave,
Thank you for your prompt reply. I do trust what you have said that if there is a major release, Symentec would definitely contact users for updates. I accept your explaination on this matter.
BTW, is the current 15.5.0.23 stable & will there be pending update to fix any issues other than FF3.
Truly version 15.5 has drastically improved my boot time and scan time. This is without doubt an improvement.
I have been using Norton products (NAV 2005, NIS2006-2008, Ghost & System Works). I can say that Symentec has a huge improvement in customer services from previous years. Of course, I hope Symentec will contnue to provide these services and improvement to its products.
Thank you for your assistance.
