VPN-not working since update 22.20.1.69 "connection failure" error

Since the Update the VPN will not connect, making any computer vulnerable.

When trying to connect it says "Secure VPN has experienced a connection failure. Please try again later"

When will this get fixed?

More to the point, when I search for other VPN's on the internet there's no connection to them...Interesting.

If this does not get fixed shortly I will sign up to another Anti-virus.

Thanks

My connection to VPN is very sporadic.  One time it will not connect and "spin" for an hour, then the next time I try it connects right away.  I also have Windows 10, Version 1909.  Could it be the Version of Windowsd that is the cause?  Just a thought!

I also let Norton support remote into my computer but they failed to recover my VPN. They said "my ISP stops VPN services"
Meanwhile, I have "Hotspot Sheild application" the free version is working on my mobile successfully on the same ISP.

This may not work for everyone but I deleted my wan ports then did a re scan and now the VPN is working.  There was an earlier post saying that they had done this with success.   For those who might be reluctant to do this you might do a search on Utube for a demo.   Proceed at your own discretion.

This does not in my book let Norton off the hook.  I let them remote into my computer and they could have very easily done that at the time.

Update on my previous post:

My issues remain exactly the same after a full uninstall and clean then re-install of a new version.

(I've just bought NEW from a well known online retailer due to Nortons' unacceptable renewal charges).

VPN works well on Windows10 tablet via WiFi. My location check agrees with Norton VPN settings.

VPN does NOT work on Ethernet wired Windows8.1 PC and does NOT work on Windows7 Ethernet wired PC.

All through same router and same ISP.

So for me the problem is with Windows7 and 8.1. I doubt WiFi vs Ethernet has anything to do with it.

I posted a comment on 31st January 2020 after being updated to version 22.20.1.69. In my case, for several days after the VPN did start working and lasted until 1st April 2020. But now it has stopped working again. I can't believe that Norton has issued another update that has caused the original fault to return. It is supposed to fix connection problems. After running live update and being updated to version 22.20.2.57, the VPN has gone back to displaying a "Connection Failure", message again. "Norton Tech", is this a regular feature that will be present after every update? If so, you can't be allowed to rip-off so many people like this.

Boakes,

I  agree with you 100%, I already start looking at some other providers, even though my subscription will expire in August, I am willing to try other providers NOW, as Norton are not even acknowledging that the upgrade they did is the problem, I give up on Norton and never again.

I am looking at other reliable solutions now, such as Bitdefender for a full solution with VPN.

I checked "I believe this comment solves this Forum Thread", for ME it is resolved, hick with Norton, at least they should have the decency to admit that their product does NOT WORK, and compensate us with the time it was down, form me since January, this is a rip-off.

Further to my other posts, I've had the same problem for some time, and like you I've only ever used Norton for over a decade. I run Windows 8.1 on my HP desktop, HP laptop and Toshiba tablet, and VPN worked fine on all of them until the dreaded 22.20.1.69 update was installed. I then lost VPN accessibility on all three devices, and there has not been much help from Norton ever since. Update 22.20.2.57 has now been released, and it was supposed to solve the VPN accessibility problems. Unfortunately, having now installed the 22.20.2.57 update on all three devices, it has not solved any of my problems at all, in fact on my desktop and laptop it actually made things slightly worse as they were both locked solid immediately after installation, and I had to resort to a "hard restart" in order to regain access to them. Strangely my tablet did not lock-up after installation but like on the other two devices VPN still did not work so no difference there then .There are no error messages apart from "connection failure", and sometimes I do not even get that.

Firstly, thanks to everyone who has replied to my earlier posts about this problem, which I've had for some time now.  I recently installed 22.20.2.57 which I believe was supposed to resolve this problem, unfortunately in my case at least it has not. It did not given me a good feeling as immediately after the installation my desktop locked up completely and I had to do a hard restart to get it going again. I still have petty much the same problem as before, VPN still does not work and I get the same "connection failure" message. I have the same problem on my laptop and tablet. I am not a computer nerd by any means, and I find some of the 'cures' somewhat daunting. The problem was, and is caused by Norton updates, and I strongly feel that they should be able to resolve this matter without end-user participation. Furthermore, I received a 3-minute Norton email survey and the first question was 'would I recommend Norton', I said "not at all" and I was redirected to a website and nothing else happened. Sounds about right.

My location is still visible. VPN says '...your data is now protected..' but it doesn't work. Before this update (69) it worked without any problems on a wired connection.

Thank you for the feedback. I have reported this to the engineering team and they will be looking into it.

I'm getting the same error code and have followed the directions to fix this to no avail. Come on Norton!! Fix this!!

Ok I updated, restarted my pc, and tried to turn on the VPN. This time it tells me the VPN connection is blocked (error code 809).

Hi,

I'm sorry for the inconvenience caused. Could you please update to the latest version, Norton Security 22.20.2.57, and check if the issue persists? Here is the release announcement. Please let me know your findings. Thank you.

Ninja_49. Do you see results similar to the screenshot below? Are you running your tests from this link, and doing the extended tests? Extended should run several queries and ONLY the region you have selected in the VPN should show. IE. only 1 server found each query with the end result displayed as below. The below screehshot is a basic test.

The second screenshot is the extended test.

Cheers

Hi, followed your instructions in changing the DNS info and restarted the comp, IP still Leaks.  Didn't do anything for me.  What else could I try??

Thanks, but:

Nope. Didn't work for me. Still have the same error.

StillActive. I'd like to follow-up in the thread with some info that may also help those with their VPN DNS leaking when checked. Once applied in my Windows 10 settings, performing a DNS check, rebooting and rechecking. These DNS entries appear to correct the VPN issue. I have a private thread elsewhere regarding that issue which cannot be linked to here. HATS off to the suggestion.

I have a solution to the VPN problem on my computers thanks to a Norton level 2 support technician (Anil).

What worked on my three Windows 10 computers was changing the DNS servers.  Here is how.

  • Open Control Panel.
  • Click on Network and Sharing Center.
  • Click the "Change adapter settings" option in the left pane.
  • Right-click the network interface adapter connected to the internet.  If there is more than one adapter shown, it is the one with no red X)
  • Click the Properties button.
  • Select the"Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) option".
  • Click on the Properties button
  • Select "Use the following DNS server addresses".  My machines were set up to "Obtain DNS Servers automatically"
  • Fill in the Preferred and Alternate DNS servers as discussed below
  • Click OK and then Close.

The technician had me use 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 for DNS servers.  The Norton 360 VPN worked immediately after making these changes.  After getting the VPN to work with the DNS servers that the technician recommended, I used the procedure above to change the DNS serves to ones I preferred, and VPN continued to work.  So, I suspect that it does no matter which DNS servers you select so long as you specify them explicitly.

The above procedure worked immediately on two of my three computers.  The third one did not work until I rebooted it, so reboot if it does not seem to work.

I hope this helps EVERYONE!

This is not ISP related for me.

My Windows 7 PC is connected to the router by ethernet cable - VPN will not work. But it did initially.....

My Windows 10 tablet connects via WiFi. VPN works perfectly.

Same router. Same ISP.

Come on Norton. Get this sorted.
