Will not take Product Key or install new Norton Security Deluxe

Spent 5 hours yesterday, did chat with 3 different people on Norton, spoke to at least 3 different people trying to resolve this problem.

No luck. I no longer have any Norton since the days ran out yesterday. It give me 2 errors. One which is a Norton error, and 1 that is a Microsoft error. Loaded 2 other computers no problem. Never had a problem like this. I originally removed everything regarding Norton, all program files, documents, anything and everything. Tried many many times installing, uninstalling as instructed to do. Norton admin could not establish a connection with my computer yesterday. They said something must be blocking it. So today I went back 4 days and did a recovery to that date thinking that maybe it would fix any problems/errors. Everything loaded including Norton except it has no days and still will not except the product key.  I can try going back to April otherwise all I can think to do is to wipe the computer by a system restore which I really don't want to do as it is so time intensive.

Is there someone that has any idea why this would be happening? Also did disk cleanup on all files. The errors I get when Norton is trying to load are: 80047ec6, 80072f8f. Is there any hope of getting this fixed or do I have to scrap the computer?

Hi MEF:

The specs <here> for the Intel Core2Duo E4500 show that your CPU does support SSE2 and higher (supported instruction sets for your E4500 are almost identical to the specs I showed <above> for my Intel Core2Duo T5550) so that's good news.  That means you should be able to use Norton v22.15.3.20 (released 15-Apr-2020), the latest legacy version for Win XP and Vista described in the product update announcement Norton 22.15.3 for Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 SP0 is now available!.  You can see your current version number in the Norton interface at Help | General Information | About; if you have an older version just run a few manual LiveUpdates until you're fully patched.

... I decided to go back to the original e-mail Norton sent me (one week ago) thanking me for purchasing and I clicked on Get Started to just give it another try and within 6 Minutes I had 'all Green Lights protected' ...

Glad to hear you were finally able to get Norton up and running.  Thanks for letting us know.

Hi Imacri,

I have Inspiron 530 Intel Core 2 Duo processor E4500. Purchased in Dec. 07'

Well in the middle of trying to send you a message about my problem I decided to go back to the original e-mail Norton sent me (one week ago) thanking me for purchasing and I clicked on Get Started to just give it another try and within 6 Minutes I had 'all Green Lights protected' so I am back just enjoying my computer instead of working on it. I thank you for trying to assist me but I am not sure what the reasons are for it downloading today verses last week.

Sandy,

Glad to hear you got it resolved.  FYI...If you have windows updates turned off, you might want to set it to notify you of pending updates before downloading.  That way you still get notifications of critical updates but can download them at your convenience.

Thank you to everyone that helped. I finally got it to take Norton. I had to install Microsoft updates, and after that Norton loaded with the installer with no further problems. I appreciate all the help.

Hi Sandy Komis:

If you used Windows System Restore to roll back your Win 8.1 system last week (assuming you have updated to Win 8.1 and are not using an unsupported Win 8 OS) you might have corrupted your Norton installation (and possibly some Win 8.1 system files) if you did not disable Norton Product Tamper Protection first.  See the support article Fix System Restore Problems with Norton Installed for more information.  You could try the following:

  1. Wipe your current Norton installation off you system as instructed in Norton Internet Security Can't Be Removed Even With NRnR.exe (i.e., uninstall from Control Panel | Programs and Features using the "remove all user data" option and then wipe orphaned remnants by running the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool in advanced "Remove Only" mode).
  2. Before reinstalling Norton, perform another System Restore using a restore point created before your subscription expired and your problems started.  This step is optional and only needs to be done if you believe the previous system restore might have damaged your Win 8.1 system files and is causing your 80047ec6 / 80072f8f errors.
  3. Reinstall the "new" Norton 360 or Norton Security using a fresh copy of the full offline installer.  Try peterweb's link https://www.norton.com/cspn360 if you want to upgrade now to the new Norton 360 with Secure VPN.  If you prefer to keep Norton Security Deluxe go to https://www.norton.com/latestns (this installer works for both NS Standard and Deluxe); other users with Norton Security Premium (with Norton Backup) should go to https://www.norton.com/latestnsbu.  These links are currently offering the v22.20.1.69 installer so once the installation has finished it might take a few rounds of manual LiveUpdates and re-boots before Help | General Information | About shows you are fully patched back to the current v22.20.2.57.

Hi MEF:

Does the CPU for your Win XP machine support the SSE2 instruction set?  If you have a very old CPU (e.g., Pentium III or older) that does not support SSE2 you should see an error message that says something like "An unsupported processor has been detected. This version of the product requires a processor that supports the SSE2 instruction set…" when you try to install any Norton v22.x product like the latest Norton 360 v22.20.2.57.  If you aren't sure you can use a free utility like Piriform's Speccy or CPUID's CPU-Z to determine if your CPU supports SSE2.  See my post in dicere's 2018 thread XP Pentium III for more information.

If your Win XP machine does have a CPU that supports SSE2 then you must install a Norton v22.15.3.20 product (released 15-Apr-2020), which is the current v22.15.x legacy version for Win XP and Vista as JJ_ noted <above>.  I'm still waiting for Norton employee Gayathri_R to post links to the full offline installers for Norton Security Standard/Deluxe v22.15.3.20 (with no Norton Backup) and Norton Security Premium v22.15.3.20 (also known as Norton Security with Backup)  - see my latest request <here>.  At the moment I only have download links for older v22.15.0.88 (EN-US) installers, which I've posted in my 2018 thread Download Links for NS/NSBU v22.15.1.8 Installers (XP and Vista).  Those old installers should still work but it would probably take several rounds of manual LiveUpdates and re-boots before Help | General Information | About showed you were fully patched back to v22.15.3.20.

Hi, peterweb

I tried the Norton 360 installer it would not begin to install at all and it said it was not compatible with and it may have said (Win 32) if that makes sense but I am not certain what it said.

I have another question. During most of my early attempts at downloading the new product when I would get an error code I would select to send I believe Norton or someone a message with these error codes I assume to notify someone about the problem. Will someone eventually get back with me to help me or what will happen?

If you have been trying to download from your Norton Account, try this direct download of the Norton 360 installer.    http://www.norton.com/cspn360

Sandy Komis,

Are you still receiving any Updates for your windows operating system from Microsoft and if so do they install without errors?

Also the 2 error codes that showed up are 80047ec6, 80072f8f. The subscription has run out but I don't think this would have anything to do with the problem since I was having error codes before it ran out.

So I cleared out all the Norton files and started with checking time sync and did that even though it appeared correct. Tried once again to download Norton, it just said there were errors and could not load. Then I tried a file on the Norton site called DSP 360 this file downloaded and it said trying to load Norton. Then I got a big red X that said can't connect to Norton server. Nothing I do fixes this problem.

Hi JJ,

Thank you for taking an interest in assisting me. I have not been able to work on the problem since you posted. And don't have time yet, I will say about the PW it was an option that I was offered while removing my old (30 days expired) version of Norton Security Deluxe. I will post to the best of my ability if my problem gets resolved and how it got resolved.

Hi MEF,

Please disregard the above referenced link to the support doc as I forgot you're running Win XP.  I believe those are links for current versions and not the one you'll need for XP.  You'll need to use version 22.15.3.20 or below as XP is considered in legacy or Maintenance Mode. Please ref this Link.

Depending on which product you previously had, you might try contacting community member @Imacri via PM and see if they might be able to provide a link for the version you're looking for.

Hi MEF,

I have the same two error codes as Sandy Kornis  and I am using Windows XP

Have you checked your PC Date and Time settings?  Do you have SP3 installed?  Do you recall when this started and had you recently made any changes to the OS, network, or installed other software around that time?  Note, some have claimed that by selecting a different time server to sync their PC resolved this error.  It took several days but did seem to resolve.

I chose to let it keep my old passwords and such... and it seems that that could have been a mistake

By old PW and such are you referring to the PW manager or your Norton settings?  Either way, I don't see this as being related to error code 80072f8f.

If you just want to try reinstalling your Norton product, you can see if downloading the installer directly from this support doc Link.  Select "Download doesn't start or complete". then scroll down to item 1 and select your product.

You can also review the following links in reference to error code 80047ec6.

I have the same two error codes as Sandy Kornis  and I am using Windows XP.  I wish my problem was over. I will be watching intently to see if an answer comes through this thread. Something else I could use help with in this situation is that I removed my old Norton program but I chose to let it keep my old passwords and such... and it seems that that could have been a mistake but now Norton is no longer in my add/remove program list anymore. At this point I am without anti-virus protection on my computer. I need HELP!!! Typing out this comment/question took a fair amount of time.

Hi Sandy Komis,

From what I've been able to find about your referenced Error Code 80072f8f, it appears to be related to a Microsoft Windows update issue. Please reference this Link.  You can also try google searching for (windows update error 80072f8f windows 8). Verify your PC's date and time are correct and ensure your PC can synchronize with MS Internet time server.

If you continue to have problems with fixing this issue, you may need to run additional repairs to resolve.  But before going to the next level, please check your PC's Date and Time are correct and report back.

The thread for the norton set up is the one I used about 5 times. That is where it gets hung up on. It tries to load, then gives me the 2 error numbers. In the past I have just used the activation key and never had to sign in with the email. This year it won't take the key and then I had to try to load Norton through set up. So I guess all I have left to try is to sign in with a different email address and password. Cleaning all files as i was told to do before downloading has done nothing.

You can use the same email address, but when you sent a download email, it will download and install a preactivated copy of your product. So if you try to use  the same email on a second device, it the activation on the second device will fail because that activation has already been registered.

Were you are just entering the product key in the Help > Enter Product Key in your Norton product?

You can also try going to    https://my.norton.com/home/setup   from the device you are having difficulty installing Norton. When you enter the product key there, it should initiate the download and installation for you.

Since I was told delete and remove Norton it asks me to sign in on my Norton account and download a new Norton with downloader. That is where is errors occur. It won't get past that. When I originally tried to enter my product key before removing Norton it would not take the product key. I have used the same product key on 2 other computers and 1 mac with no problem. I have always used same email with no problem. Doesn't make any sense.
