Hallo MrKonfusius,

I use norton 560 premium 5.0. Should I disable windows defender or leave it running? I have not noticed any conflicts. Does 360 include its own defender? I have heard that conflicts can occur if you have two defender products running side by side. Please advise.
Thank You
There's no harm in leaving Windows Defender running if there are no conflicts and if there were it would be disabled during install. Malwarebytes is great for removal of malware, but the free version is limited to just that. As long as you are not running other anti-virus or firewall programs not included with Windows, you should be fine.
Thanks for the info. I already use the Malwarebytes paid for version. This has paid dividends and removed threats which Norton has missed. I will disable Windows Defender and see how it goes.
Hi Again
Paid version has Real time component so that is Disabled I take it!
Hello,
The Windows Firewall settings are for the Windows Firewall - they aren't related to Windows Defender.
Here are instructions on how to disable Windows Defender:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Turn-Windows-Defender-on-or-off
Windows Defender is not installed ?
I went to control panel, system and security, administrative tools, services, and Disabled there.

Neil
Hai,
Will You please post a screenshot of it for better view. Meanwhile you may also try to manually execute windows defender and check if it causes any errors.
Also please specify whether you're logged into Administrator account or a normal user account or guest (in terms of privilages) when you saw this message.
Usually by default Windows firewall and antispyware programs(Windows Defender) will be disabled when NIS is installed inorder to avoid conflicts and errors between these two programs (ie NIS and Windows defender / firewall).
Thanks for the reply.
I am logged in as an administrator. Also, Windows Defender is disabled. If I try to start it, I get a messge that says another program is being used.
I have attached a screenshot of the windows event log.
Thanks for your help.

See what others say but my take on this is that you notice you get is a literal truth that the programmers did not anticipate and bypass -- Of course you can't stop something that isn't running!
If Norton is running OK then I would not worry but if you get this repeatedly I'd try putting the Defender on Disabled and not on Manual and see if anything complains? It would juste mean, I think, that if you did uninstall Norton or any other security application then Defender wouldl not automatically start up.
I have this same exact issue with Windows 8.1 and Norton 360 Premier. Every 5min the Event Log shows The Windows Security Center Service could not stop Windows Defender. I have verified that Windows Defender is OFF as my security is being managed by Norton 360.
This is a brand new PC with a fresh install of Windows 8.1 and Norton 360 Premier.
I have Norton IS 2014 running on Windows 8.1. After the last NIS update, I get many of the following messages in my event log:
"The Windows Security Center Service could not stop Windows Defender."
I checked, and the windows defender service is not running and its startup is set to manual.
Does Symantec or anyone know what the resolution to this issue is.
Thanks,
Bill Byrnes
Hi MelissaGT and billbyrnes,
Logs are basically for advanced trouble shooting purposes. Basically since NIS and N360 are both reporting no errors and windows 'Action Center' doesnt notify you about any problems, thus both of your systems are secure / protected.
Moreover the notification in Event Viewer is just with 'i' symbol ie for information only ( which means that you do need to give it a minimum care only). So nothing serious is being occuring in the system which can cause chaos or damage.
As said by huwyngr, Win Defender takes care of your system in absence of any third party AV (like NIS or Malwarebytes or Avast or Zonealarm or whatsoever) or if third party AV is out of date.
I've personally seen this message in my system (using NIS), friends systems(using K7 Total Security, KIS).
If you need further info these links may be helpful:
NB: This link above is applicable ONLY IF YOU UNINSTALLED Norton PRODUCT! and have some error.
You may also revisit last part os message#2 of this thread.
Just to back up my earlier thought, this is from the Symantec Endpoint Forums -- the Enterprise versions for Business -- back in 2013
Issue
After you install the Symantec Endpoint Protection client on Windows 8.1, you see "The Windows Security Center Service could not stop Windows Defender" written to the Application event log every five minutes.
Windows 8.1
This message is informational only, and you can safely disregard it.
Thank you for the assistance. I saw this post from the Endpoint forums as well and it put my mind at ease. It just seems rather silly to have that notification every 5min when Windows Defender is clearly OFF and it won't even let me access it because it says it's OFF and controlled by Norton 360.
