I went on vacation and when I returned I powered up my computer which needed 16 updates from Microsoft. I did the Windows update, and when I powered back on I got a loginui.exe error saying my msimg32.dll file was missing or not the correct version. I got a Windows Vista repair program and was able to copy the msimg32.dll from my sisters computer to mine and I was able to log in. Then there were 3 more Windows updates and I did those as well. After rebooting from these three Windows updates I noticed the orange coloration on my Norton Security Icon in the system tray. I clicked on the Norton Icon and nothing happened. I uninstalled Norton and Constant Guard, then reinstalled Constant Guard and when I clicked on the Norton "Install Now" radion button on the "Constant Guard Protection Suite Window" nothing happened. I called Comcast who said that it was a Constant Guard Problem, they put me in touch with Constant Guard who said it was a Norton Problem and they put me in touch with Norton. A Norton Tech took control of my computer and he was able to get Norton to install.
The Norton Tech also installed Norton Power Eraser on my computer and scanned for virus, malware, etc and none were found.
I can't leave well enough alone, I rebooted my computer and Norton didn't Launch with the Reboot.
I used the Link provided by the Norton Tech to try the Norton install again, first it uninstalled Norton, rebooted, reinstalled Norton, rebooted and I got the Norton Icon Back in System tray with a Green Checkmark. But clicking on the Norton Icon in the System Tray, clicking on the "Open the Norton Security Suite" link on the "Constant Guard Protection Suite" window, clicking on the Norton Security Suite Icon in Start/Program Files/Norton, or going to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Security Suite\Engine64\20.4.0.40\uistub.exe icon in the Norton Directory nothing happens.
It looks like if I have to re-boot my computer I'll have to uninstall Norton before I shut down, then re-install Norton - reboot, and then reboot again after the install. I'm afraid that will only work for the Norton Version I have the Download Link For.
I was going to cross post this on the Windows Vista Forum, but can't figure out what has to happen to allow me to post there..
I believe that Norton needs to contact Microsoft and figure out what Microsofts last update did to Vista that won't allow Norton to launch.
Right now I have a Norton icon in my sys-tray with green check mark and ccsvchst.exe *32 in my Processes.
As I said on the Comcast Forum, I'll answer you here and I know others will have suggestions - so you may get more info here.
First thing I would suggest is from the main page of Comcast NSS, Select Settings > Antivirus > Automatic Protection Tab and change Boot Time Porterction to Aggressive. This will make the drivers load earlier in the boot sequence and may clear up your delayed green check.
That said, please verify that you are running version 20.4.0.40 - from main page, select Support and the About - it will show your version number. Then please run LiveUpdate Manually (rebooting as requested) unti such time as LiveUpdate responds with the specific words "no updates found". I ask for this as thre was an update in the past that was uspposed to correct the delayed start (RED X vs Green Check).
Also for your info - there was a recent patch that updated NSS to Version 20.4.0.40 and some (myself included) had to try to install; the Pacth numerous times and had to reboot. When the Patch is applied it shuts odwn other programs and then restarts them and sometimes users have reported a RED X on the Norton Icon during this shut down/start up procedure - as well as a blink on their monitor.
Let us know if any of this helps and or what the results are and we'll go from there.
Did you have any other security software installed on your system before installing NSS? If so, you need to fully remove that with the appropriate removal utility.
I have read many posts here suggesting NOT installing the Constant Guard feature because it can cause problems. Try removing Constant Guard using Windows Add/Remove Programs.
I can't open Norton at ALL. Clicking on Any type of Icon related to Norton has a negative result. It doesn't open.
Where is the mainpage of "Comcast NSS?"
The version is 20.4.0.40 that's from looking at the uistub.exe file via windows explorer, the file doesn't do anything when I click on it.
I have a Green Check Icon on the Norton Security Suite Icon in my system tray currently, but clicking on the Nortion Security Suite Icon in my system tray has a negative result.
The only way I have to get the Norton Security Suite Icon in my System Tray and the svcshst.exe to appear in my "processes" is to do the uninstall-reinstall, with associated reboot routine I stated earlier in the post and I believe that will only work so long as I have the the 20.4.0.40 version of NSS.
The computer came with Norton originally, I had Comcast before the computer, comcast was with McAffee, when I first installed McAffee I had to uninstall norton, when they went back to norton I had to uninstall McAffee.
Norton was working just fine before the Windows Updates, I didn't install any other software prior to, or since the Windows Updates.
The Norton Tech who took control of my computer install the Power Eraser which didn't find anything, as well as re-installing Norton.
I usually uninstall unused programs all the time just to free up disc space.
I haven't seen a link on the comcast page which allows you to install Norton without Installing Constant Guard. As far as I know you have to install Constant Guard, then from the Constant Guard Protection Suite Window, you get an option to install Norton Security Suite.
Since you can not get to the Main page of NSS, please go to the Control Panel, Prograsm & Features and tell us what is listed as being installed from Norton - is there a Norton Secuirty Suite entry? Does it show an installation date of the last time you installed it and does it show Version 20.4.0.40? Knowing what (if anything shows as insatlled from Norton) will give us a starting point.
Thanks for the info, let's try the instructions in this Norton Security Suite FAQ since NSS does show as installed. Yes it is probably close to what you have done in the past, but please try it and see what happens. One small thing I would like you to do, use this link instead of the one in the FAQ for the download of NSS. This will save you a lot of updating with Liveupdate - as you experienced before.
Let us know how things go and if anything goes wrong on the way.
It sounds like you got NSS installed - but it has not updated enough. Can you right click on the System Tray Icon and select the Live Update opton? You need to run LiveUpdate, (rebooting when requested) until LiveUpdates responds specifically "no updates found"? Of course if you can not get that to work, we'll have to do some more barnstorming.
Can you by chance left click on the NSS Icon and see if NSS opens?
After a while the white x in a red circle went away and I got a green circle with white check mark.
Nothing to do with Norton opens when I click on any associated Icon from NSS.
still version 20.3.1.22
When I cursor over the icon in the system tray the balloon of "Norton Security Suite" appears and I left click and get a menu, but nothing from the menu opens.
McAfee has been gone from my computer for about two years, Norton worked before I think Wednesday, it stopped working after the reboot from the Windows Update. I believe Norton is working to an extent, the automation of the program, protection, etc works. But if I want to or need to do anything, I am unable to get a response from Norton.
I will run the McAfee tool for S#!+$ and Giggles, but I have a lot of doubts about it having any affect.
I could not Run SymNRA in advanced mode, caused a system crash when it started the reboot. Also NRA did not Autolaunch in Startup. When I tried to run SymSL I got no reaction. I was able to run SymNRA from the exe in Normal Mode and I uploaded a zipped error log to the address you specified, as well as my DxDiag log.
Okay, I spent about 4 nights online with Techs from Norton, last Monday 7/29/13 I got on with a Service Manager, Brian Coe, he renamed a file in my Norton Directory and Norton worked good until tonight. Tonight I got the notification for an Adobe Flash Player update, the Flash Player update didn't work and Norton won't open from any of the launch icons again. I can't even close Norton through Task manager.
I didn't write down the name and location of the file he renamed.
