2 Large Back-To-Back Virus Definition X64 Updates This Morning

Apostolos,

Something else that I did not think to state is that if you do completely remove Spybot you are eliminating variables while if you alter some setting to see if that fixes it you are adding variables .......

Adding variables is not good troubleshooting ....

Attached is the Log.Lue File for my 2010 Milwaukee PC Desktop - Windows 7 64 Bit Sp1/NAV Version 20.4.0.40, per HarryP's request.

This Log.Lue File dated 3/26/14 was preceded on 3/23/14 by a joint DNS Cache Flush/Winsock Reset, and on 3/25/14 by a Spybot S&D settings tweak.

I am still testing the Spybot S&D settings tweak.  I have not yet uninstalled Spybot S&D.

DD

NAV Version 20.4.0.40
2010 Milwaukee PC Desktop - Windows 7 64 Bit Sp1

and

NAV Version 21.1.0.18
2013 Dell 17R 5720 Inspiron Laptop - Windows 7 64 Bit Sp1

Edit:   HarryP  just informed me of the following..

"Please provide the log files from the latest version of Norton. If possible, try to install Norton Antivirus 21 and then try to run LiveUpdates. Normally, our team recommends to collect log files from the latest version in order to test it further."

So, Log.Lue File dated 3/26/14 has been removed.  I will be doing a full cleaning of NAV Version 20.4.0.40 from my
2010 Milwaukee PC Desktop - Windows 7 64 Bit Sp1 (assuming the above mentioned steps have not addressed this problem), and capture the Log.Lue File from the newly installed NAV 21.1.1 (if this problem persists with NAV 21.1.1).

HarryP, if you would like me to reattach the NAV Version 20.4.0.40 Log.Lue File dated 3/26/14, please let me know.

Hugh,

I'm having a hard time to understand what you mean in that message, so please shed some light.

Best regards,

Sorry abaout that .... I thought it was perfectly clear .... <gdr>

It refers back to what I've been saying earlier, eg in

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/2-Large-Back-To-Back-Virus-Definition-X64-Updates-This-Morning/m-p/1111440#M255673

about troubleshooting is all about eliminating variables and the benefits of negative results in troubleshooting and in research, both of which I have a long experience of in different environments.

By contrast, DD keeps adding variables by tweaking settings for example on Spybot which it has been repeatedly suggested (and not just by me) he should uninstall to eliminate it as a possible cause of the problem.

<< I am still testing the Spybot S&D settings tweak.  I have not yet uninstalled Spybot S&D.  >>

Hugh,

OK all is clear now and I agree and support your opinion on the matter.

The good point is that Symantec asked him to gather some log files, so hopefully, results and recommended actions will arrive soon from their part.

Sorry if I asked for some clarification...

Regards,

No problem -- it's why authors need editors !

Call me sentimental...I'd like to give the Spybot S&D  tweaks a chance to exonerate Spybot S&D as the cause of this problem, as Spybot S&D has served me very well over 10+ years.  I can give you 100% assurance that if these Spybot S&D  tweaks, in combination  with the joint DNS Cache Flush/Winsock Reset, do not address this problem, I will be uninstalling Spybot S&D (and testing) before undertaking the cleaning of NAV Version 20.4.0.40 and installation of NAV V21.1.1.

Update:

Incremental Norton Smart Virus Definition X64 file installation once again failed (via Automatic Live Update -246.17KB). Norton Pulse Updates (511B) and Norton Safe Web Statistics (2.76B) installed successfully.  Manual Live Update subsequently downloaded/installed 198.11MB full Norton Smart Virus Definition X64 file and Norton 2013 Reputation Revocation List (2.22KB).

So, Saturday's joint DNS Cache Flush/Winsock Reset (per peterwebs suggestion), combined with Tuesday's Spybot S&D  tweaks, has failed to address this problem on my 2010 Milwaukee PC Desktop - Windows 7 64 Bit Sp1 using NAV Version 20.4.0.40.

This now makes 5 full (195+MB) Norton Smart Virus Definition X64 file downloads/installations in the last 7 days on my 2010 Milwaukee PC Desktop - Windows 7 64 Bit Sp1 using NAV Version 20.4.0.40.

In light of this latest failure, I have removed Spybot S&D (along with removing the Spybot S&D Spybot S&D Directory) before undertaking the cleaning of NAV Version 20.4.0.40 and installation of NAV V21.1.1.

In anticipation of doing/undertaking the cleaning of NAV Version 20.4.0.40 and subsequent installation of NAV V21.1.1. is it possible to still download NAV Version 21.1.1?

In using the latest NAV download link, you get V21.2.0.38.

I'm aware that it is still possible to  download earlier versions of NAV, like NAV V20 from earlier discussions on this forum, so in an effort to cover all bases, I would like to consider specifically using Version 21.1.1 if it is available for download.

Thanks in advance.

Hi DD,

Let's hope you do not have a very sophisticated Rootkit installed on your systems operating in stealth mode, therefore not detected by NAV heuristics scan and quietly corrupt the NAV defs.

Regards,

I certainly hope not.  The fact that this same, identical problem began happening at about the same time on both of my PCs, located in 2 different geographic locations, used by 2 different people, running 2 different versions of NAV, leads me to believe that this is not virus-related.  The chances that sophisticated Rootkit operating in stealth mode could have infected both PCs at the same time seems inconceivable/unfathomable/unlikely to me.

FYI, these Incremental Norton Smart Virus Definition X64 file installation failures are random, and don't happen every time.  In other words, there are times when the Incremental Norton Smart Virus Definition X64 file installs successfully.  I'd say that these Incremental Norton Smart Virus Definition X64 file installation failures are happening about 40% of the time.

If there is a sophisticated Rootkit operating in stealth mode, wouldn't it corrupt the NAV defs continuously, causing a 100% Incremental Norton Smart Virus Definition X64 file installation failure rate?

Also FYI, there is no "file-sharing" between the 2 PCs which could have potentially transferred a sophisticated Rootkit from 1 PC to the other.

Apostolos:

Thanks for your reply.

In answer to your question, no  I have not.

To repeat, I wanted to first uninstall Spybot S&D (which I did this morning) and test before undertaking the cleaning of NAV Version 20.4.0.40 and installation of NAV V21.1.1.

In anticipation of doing/undertaking the cleaning of NAV Version 20.4.0.40 and subsequent installation of NAV V21.1.1. to your knowledge, is it possible to still download NAV Version 21.1.1?

Thanks in advance.

DD,

I do not see why you want this version, even if you have it, when you will run LU it will give you the latest version 21.2.0.38.

Please explain...

Regards,

Update as on 10:50AM CST:

Spybot S&D has officially been exonerated!!

As I suspected, Spybot S&D is not the cause of this problem, as follows:

Incremental Norton Smart Virus Definition X64 file installation once again failed (via Automatic Live Update -239.26KB)Norton Pulse Updates (481B) installed successfully.  Norton Reputation Revocation List (1.87KB) installation also failed alongside the failed Incremental Norton Smart Virus Definition X64 file.

Manual Live Update subsequently downloaded/installed 198.38MB full Norton Smart Virus Definition X64 file and Norton 2013 Reputation Revocation List (2.22KB).

This now makes 2 full (195+MB) Norton Smart Virus Definition X64 file downloads/installations today alone,  and 6 full (195+MB) Norton Smart Virus Definition X64 file downloads/installations in the last 7 days on my 2010 Milwaukee PC Desktop - Windows 7 64 Bit Sp1 using NAV Version 20.4.0.40.

SoSaturday's joint DNS Cache Flush/Winsock Reset (per peterwebs suggestion), combined with Tuesday's Spybot S&D  tweaks, and todays Spybot removal has failed to address this problem on my 2010 Milwaukee PC Desktop - Windows 7 64 Bit Sp1 using NAV Version 20.4.0.40.

In light of this latest failure, I will be undertaking a thorough cleaning of NAV Version 20.4.0.40, from my system, followed by the installation of NAV V21.1.1.

DD

and

2013 Dell 17R 5720 Inspiron Laptop - Windows 7 64 Bit Sp1

I have to agree with Apostolos about the version you are seeking - it wil probably update.

I did find a download for a trial of 21.0.0

Can you disable the Live Update Automatic Download of New Version  in V21.1.1 or  v21.2.0.38?   Or was that eliminated in the latest version?

The ability disable the Live Update Automatic Download of New Version  was still an option in V20.4.0.40 and V21.1.0.18.

DD,

This only works if you have version 20 & you do not want to upgrade to v 21.

If you download a version of NAV 21 you will receive the update patch via LU.

OK..thanks guys.  I'll use the latest  V21.2.0.38.

Update:

Performed the full cleaning and installation per yanks instructions.

Immediately got an Error: "3047,40000"   message.    LiveUpdate Repair then kicked in, performing a download of some type of updates (virus defs?).

Other than that, the installation of  NAV V21.2.0.38 was ultimately successful.

Will provide further updates as I now test to see if this cleaning of NAV V20.4.0.40 and installation of  NAV V21.2.0.38 corrects the problem.
