clarifying:
N360 v24.8 Cloud Backup does not recognize my external drive as backup destination.
N360 v24.8 Cloud Backup does recognize my internal drive as backup destination when cloud storage is full.
Thank you for confirming my experience. No notice from Norton; just drop a valuable feature while they charge more and constantly try to sell me more services. Do you have any recommendations for a local device backup solution? Or a different internet security / utility option?
Thank you again.
Yeah just got off phone with tech support. Norton no longer supports local backup. My hard drive crashed over weekend. Replaced it and tried to restore backup. New Norton will not allow access other than their cloud. Tech support basically says tough shit. No notice given about this change. All my data gone! I will be canceling all my and my family’s subscriptions.
Payed version of 360 with annoying payed functions l’m not interested (and cannot hide them) , and remove crucial functions like local/network backup that was one of the few reasons I still renew for all theses years … bad call , very bad call
I CAN also confirm Norton will NOT backup to a removable device or local HD (external) unless a backup set is already on that device. Latest release version as shown below.
It appears you can access your backup on external drives. BUT WHAT DOES “RESTORE” MEAN? Restore to where? Does it give access so as to Back-Up new data to that set?? Could overwrite only copy of important files?? Arrogant attitude to people buying the product. They have been dividing features and the charging for the separate product. Scandalous!
This just popped up for me today. I manually backup my laptop every Saturday and today was the first appearance of the new process. Fortunately my Norton subscription expires in December, so I guess it’s time to say good bye to Peter’s company. Sad to say that seems to happen more and more these days. Customer experience is not an issue. I am glad I had may days with Bill & Dave, where the customer was an important part of the product development (BTW, it is not there any more either).
This is highly irresponsible of Norton to have no warning forbid backups to local external drives and force customers to back their things onto the cloud. 1. Cloud storage is not safe ever and there are privacy issues. 2. connectivity to the cloud to backup and restore must be a nightmare. 3 my files belong to me and i want them on my own drives and not onto their cloud. 4. I only bought norton because of the backup and with it gone, i need to find something else quick.
Notice:I’m now retracting my understanding posted 22-Oct-2024 [here]
x.com/Norton … now advises 27-Oct-2024
Sorry to inform you Norton 360 v24.10.9535 does not have function to backup external drive.
I am sorry to inform you that if you wish to backup external hard drive then you need to download the old version of Norton…however, in new version of Norton we are working on it.
If you wish to download the old Norton version in this case, kindly get in touch with our technical experts by calling on these numbers: 18007456061 or 18007456034, they will surely help you by looking into this matter and taking remote access only if required.

Goodbye Norton. Removing a crucial feature of an application that has been available for years, with no notice or regard for those who use it. Not interested in your cloud-only backup solution.
It took me 55min to backup 4% of my drive to the cloud. This has been the problem for many years and is why I have never used it.
I ran Live Update on latest version and I ended up being offered massive cloud storage FREE. How long before Norton starts charging us for the extra space like they have done in the past.
I got the same answer from Norton Tech Support. You have to fill up the Cloud Backup location before you will be able to backup locally. Further, If you delete the Cloud backup once local is available, you will be forced to backup to the cloud again.
I agree with others, this is a terrible idea. Cloud backup is not safe and is excessively slow!!
Bring Back Local Backup or run the risk of losing customers!!!
I do not want to backup to the cloud. If this feature is not to backup to a drive is not put back on, I to will be looking to discontinue my Norton subscription.
