Hi,
Every time smart scan runs I get a notification for problems only Norton utilities can fix, which basically is just them advertising.
Is there a way to disable these utility only checks as I’m not interested in this product?
To be honest, I hate where Norton has been taking this 360 product of recent years! I’ve used Norton since the early 00’s and I’ve never been so close to leaving for another product as I am right now!
Security software should keep you and your PC safe without getting in your way unless user input is required, which is how Norton use to be. Now it seems more interested in selling you more products then doing what it’s meant to be doing!
I agree with you and I think it is getting worse. I actually went onto support chat to ask how to stop this and was told we can’t. Apparently if I run certain scans I will get less notifications for other products.
Today I logged in to Windows and the app had a notification, again trying to sell me clean up utilities.
It is getting so constant and annoying I might as well go back to a free product. I chose to pay for Norton to stop these messages!
They’ve injected these upselling ads into their “Smart Scan” which is enabled by default so would recommend disabling this and running other scans instead.
In my mind this “smart scan” is pure and utter ransomware as its been designed to frighten non-techy users into paying more for something they don’t need.
Its hard to trust Norton with protecting our security when their products behave like the kind of thing you’d expect from a scammer.
Disabling scans - any type of scan - to avoid adware/scareware, is an absurd solution. But it’s one I fully support, if indeed it does work. Be interesting to know if this has been tested and confirmed to be the case.
Unfortunately, as has been said, these tactics will work with less tech-savvy people, and that’s exactly the reason this nonsense is shown.
I have these messages constantly now because I was unaware that running a Smart Scan would trigger them. At least with the old version we had an option to stop showing annoying pop-ups.
That’s not my only gripe, but that’s for another discussion. I was happy with v22, but the new version is a total mess. I’m sure they’ll eventually fix many of the most problematic issues, but releasing an inferior product - especially one focussed on security - to users is unacceptable. I intend to let my subscription run down and go elsewhere.
As with a few others, I removed the current version and re-installed V22 which has been working as before with minor adjustments. If interested, SoulAsylum has posted instructions and links for downloads here Revert to Vers…
I could not agree more with these posts. I have been a customer of Norton Utilities for many years which must mean that I am overall satisfied with the product and protection it delivers. However, I am increasingly irritated by the constant upselling. I have outdated drivers; I’m being tracked on the dark web etc. Does anybody from Norton / Symantec / Gen Digital look at these posts? If so, I would love to hear from them because it seems very difficult to otherwise contact anybody at the company. I subscribe to Norton Utilities Ultimate. One dictionary definition of ‘ultimate’ is “The greatest, most extreme, thing achievable or conceivable of its sort.” Therefore, by definition, it should cover all potential threats and, if new tech capability comes along, it should automatically be updated to include that capability. Norton could charge for that as part of the initial purchase price and the ongoing subscription price. Then customers like me wouldn’t be constantly frustrated by all the unwanted upselling tactics.
