Extract many years old backup from external drive

Dear community,
I have an external drive with a backup from Norton 360.
The computer that is backed up is long gone many years ago and the drive was kept as a backup for the future. Now when its needed, I realize that its not possible to extract the backup since my account is inactive and the license expired. I was told that the account is deleted after 3 months of inactivity and there is no possibility to recover anything. Can this be real??
So Norton charge allot of monney to be able to do backups, then you haveto keep paying them constantly to be able to use the backup, that you saved locally to your own hard drive? It sounds insane to me, so I hope I got it wrong.
Does anyone know anything about this? Please tell me Im wrong! :exploding_head:
