Help with excessive Norton log files

Issue abstract: Norton is creating excessive log files that is taking up hundreds of GBs of data.

Detailed description: Recently, I noticed my Windows 11 Surface Pro’s SSD was getting really full. I ran WinDirStat and realized I had >500 GB of log files from Norton. I was able to delete them by temporarily deactivating the tamper proof feature in Norton, going to ProgramData–>Norton–>Antivirus–>log. However, a few hours later, I found Norton had created another 50 log files!! Each file is a little over 1Gb in size. How do I stop Norton from creating log files.

Product & version number: Norton 360 program version 25.8.10387

OS details: Windows 11 Home (OS build 26100.4946)

What is the error message you are seeing? N/A

If you have any supporting screenshots, please add them:

Thanks for the reply. I have Norton Utilities. I can remove the logs but I want to know how to prevent them from being created since they are so large and so many of them.

then i think you need to ask norton they now it do you whant the norton a4 page

Hello @ms1980
~ have you tried calling Norton LiveUpdate + Restart (not Shut down) machine?

~ have you tried Norton 360 → Troubleshooting?

fwiw ~ my boiler plate:
If your Norton is not working as expected and you’ve tried Troubleshooting → Reset to Default &or Repair Norton & clean re-install Norton 360…then…reach out to Norton support here.
Note: Reset to Default resets Cloud Backup

==============================================

Download and run the Norton 360 Remover tool for Windows here
Note: at this time…I’m not finding Reinstall as per DocID: v20240301142500636

fwiw ~ my Norton 360 Remover tool preference is Remove only…with scour File Explorer for remnants and CCleaner - Registry - Scan for Issues + CCleaner…back up the registry before making changes.

fwiw ~ were my machine = I’d clean uninstall → clean install

Thanks for all the tips. I’ve tried restart and uninstall –> install. I’m not sure if I did a clean install though. I used Control Panel to uninstall and told it to delete all the associated files then reinstalled Norton. Would that qualify as a clean install?

A clean removal is best done with the current version removal tool, then manually locating remnant folders and deleting before a reinstall.

SA

and are you still generating log files?

Ok…I will try to use the tool and manually delete remnant folders and report back. Thx again.

yep…made another 4 Gb of log files in 24h, lol. I’m trying what SA suggested in terms of the clean install.

hope it work and remember to delete all

clean uninstall → clean install…also, suggested here

Please share your progress
Thanks

Unfortunately, the clean install didn’t work. In the past 36h, it has made 41 log files for a total of 44 GB again. The files are all MDMP files in ProgramData–>Norton–>Antivirus–>log

Any other ideas?

The MDMP files are mini dumps by the OS, created when an app crashes. What is the CPU in your Surface Pro machine? Completely forgot to ask previously.

Have you also looked at the System Event Viewer to gain any other information about what the errors are that we can review here for you?

How to Open Event Viewer

  1. 1. Right-Click Start Button:

Right-click the Start button (the Windows logo) in the taskbar and select “Event Viewer” from the power user menu.

  1. 2. Use the Search Bar:

Click the Start button or the search icon and type “Event Viewer”. Select the best match from the search results to open the tool.

  1. 3. Use the Run Dialog:

Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog, type eventvwr, and press Enter or click OK.

SA

The CPU is a Snapdragon X 12-core X1E80100.

Re Event Viewer, I’m able to open it. Is the information you seek listed under “Summary of Administrative Events”? If yes, in that window, under ‘Event Type’, there were 0 critical errors but 159 errors in the past 7 days (9 in the past 24 hours). Of this, there were 15 Kernel-EventTracing, 1 Firefox Default Browser Agent, 4 WindowsUpdateClient, 1 Volsnap, 21 CertificateServicesClient-CertEnroll, 6 DeviceSetupManager, 2 PrintService, 2 Application Error, 1 Application Hang, 7 FirefoxDefault Browerser Agent, 2 Service Control Manager, 2 Service Control Manager, 10 Service Control Manager, 3 DistributedCOM, 82 DistributedCOM.

There were also 176 Event type = Warnings and 14,975 Event type = Information.

I have not noticed any BSOD, applications crashing, etc… I do notice that when I turn on and off my bluetooth headphones while I watching YouTube, the video will sometimes get stuck and not play.

Thx again,

Mike

Thanks for the post back. Your CPU is supported. Did you download the Norton app from the Microsoft store and install? Full install of N360?

SA

I downloaded the Norton App from the Norton website after I logged into my account. It’s a full install of N360.

My suggestion is use the removal tool and remove the current install on your device. Reboot and get the Norton app from the Microsoft Store and install/update it. Recheck for the issue persisting.

SA

Ok…I did the clean removal and reinstall via the Microsoft Store. Will update tomorrow re if it worked. Thx.

hope it works
