How can you tell which device being protected is which? I only have 3 devices but Norton is showing more. Some of those devices I no longer have but I don't know how to ID them.
Thanks for doing that test! That is really interesting.
I wonder what the magic switch in Norton is, that makes it pick up the system name in some cases (e.g. your test) and not in others. If anyone has a clue, I'd be interested to hear.
I've see recommendations here to have 'remote management' turned on in Norton, which I do - but still no luck. (And the description of Remote Management doesn't suggest any link to how Norton names devices, so I probably have the wrong end of the stick in even trying that.)
FWIW ~ as test: Rename DESKTOP-EU129HB to HP-123 + run Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool + run LiveUpdate x3 + Remote Management On + Restart machine x3.
Note: View Devices renders duplicate 'DELL' tiles and does not accurately report Online Offline
as always, your mileage may vary
btw ~ Speccy reports Computer Name > DESKTOP-EU129HB
pinholesteve:That is definitely how it should be, that's for sure. Over 10+ years and maybe 15 installs, I've never had Norton pick up my machine name. Ever. I sure wish that it had been so.
1) I'm glad it works for you. For me, my Windows system names are things like 'HPENVY' or 'XPS' - i.e. typically just the make and/or model, and possibly a user name blended in. Norton has never picked these up on install.
2) I'm intrigued by the second name you mention - DESKTOP-EU129HB To me, that really reads like a Norton-generated name (if it's not, apologies - maybe that's just a style that works for you.) And then, it's your system name too. You picked a system name that matched Norton's generated naming convention? Or (heaven forbid) Norton pushed its device name out to the Windows level? (surely not...)
1) Hmm...okay. Sorry!
2) DESKTOP-EU129HB is my Windows > System Information > System Name
~ Select Start > Settings > System > About.
~ Windows > Search > "System Information"
~ Windows > Run > "msinfo32"
Windows setup must have picked DESKTOP-EU129HB and I never Rename'd [here].
and Norton must have picked up the name.

(super clear & well annotated/illustrated post, btw. Thanks for taking the time to do that.)
pinholesteve:The responses here focus on showing the total list of devices, and how to remove a device. But how do you know what actual, physical device maps to the names like DESKTOP-ABC123D4 that Norton makes up at install time?
FWIW ~ my Norton About -> Device Name matches my System Name.
FWIW ~ maybe, see if your System Name relates to Norton About -> Device Name &or the Device Name shown with your Norton account. for example:

I think you have to just ask each 'living' system what its device name (in Norton) is. Once you've done that for all living systems, the licenses for the other should be available to reassign.
To find out the current device name (and eliminate it from any 'dead' devices that might have Norton allocated to them):
- Go to the Classic interface for Norton on Windows (not MyNorton). This is very important, and the online docs omit this step.
- As the online help says: Click on Help, and then About, and the popup tells you the current device name.
- If it's still DESKTOP-????? or a similar junk name, go to the Dashboard at Norton.com under your account, click on Review Devices under Device Security. This shows a grid of tiles, one for each licensed system. Find the current system name, and click on the 3 dots, lower right. This gives a popup with Rename Device - and give it a normal name, to preserve your sanity the next time you try to figure out which systems are which.

Identify devices that are currently protected by Norton
When you sign in to your account, you can find how many devices are currently protected. If you want to move your Norton protection from one of your devices, you first need to identify it from the list.
On Windows devices, on the main product window, click Help, and under General Information, click About. You can find the device name displayed there.

Confirm Remote Management is On + Restart (not Shut down) machine.
Try turning off other devices -> check Online Offline status (status may take time to change)

The Devices page in your Norton Account is notorious for being incorrect. The first thing to check is to open the classic 360 interface on your devices by clicking on the Norton icon in the system tray and clicking on Open Norton 360. Then click on Settings > Administrative Settings and be sure Remote Management is turned on. That will allow the device to be listed in your Account. It may take a little time as it is not instantaneous.
To get an accurate list of devices, log into your Norton Account and click on the user icon at the top right, then click on Manage My Subscriptions. Then find your current subscription and click on Manage Licenses to see the list of devices activated on that subscription.
