I can not create a backup on my external drive

Note: Please do not post Personally Identifiable Information like email address, personal phone number, physical home address, product key etc.

Issue abstract:

Detailed description: I am trying to back up to a 4TB external drive. I can read from and write to the drive. It has 1.5T of available space. I select the drive and the files to back up and click “Create Backup.” The wheel spins for a while and the screen goes back to “No local backup created yet.”

Product & version number:25.6.10221 (build 25.6.10221.940)

OS details: Windows 11 home

What is the error message you are seeing? No error message

If you have any supporting screenshots, please add them:

Have you mapped your external drive to a drive letter? That is required for Norton Backup to find the drive.

What does “map” mean? I tell Norton to back up to drive D, and I can read and write from/to that drive. It is the external drive.

Mapping a drive is just having Windows assign a drive letter to the drive instead of it just appearing as a device I Windows Explorer.

If Norton sees your external drive as a drive letter, it has been mapped.

Thank you peterweb.
Anyone have a solution? Norton? Hello?

Norton LiveUpdate + Restart (not Shut down) machine

If your Norton is not working as expected and you’ve tried Troubleshooting → Reset to Default &or Repair Norton & clean re-install Norton 360…then…reach out to Norton support.
Note: Reset to Default resets Cloud Backup

Download and run the Norton 360 Remover tool for Windows here

Maybe, try Troubleshooting → Record a performance issue &or Enable/Send debug logs

May be best to Contact Norton Support

Hello @dlockesf1

Same issue. The screen takes minutes to appear. Previous local backups are no longer visible. I create a new local backup, but it returns to the screen and says no local backups exist. Probelem with the latest 360 version.

You’ve reported “issue” via Norton support?
What did Norton support do/say?

Are you DAS or NAS?
Are you HDD or SSD?

I’m working on exactly the same problem. Try to backup to external USB drive R: which is available, writeable and readable in Windows. Run local backup, after finishing I shortly can see the backup, but starting the local backup windows next time, I see only “No local backup created yet.” Could you solve the issue meanwhile, @dlockesf1 ?

Have you reported “issue” via Norton 360 → Troubleshooting?

Hello @Martin_Huber

hello @bjm, not yet. After searching I found the hint to run the remove and reinstall. But after running it is still the same. The first time I could run a local backup on my external USB drive. But now it can’t be seen anymore in norton 360.
Ich now have activated the debug logs and try again to run a local backup. But after clicking on “create backup” I only see the window telling “no local backups created” and with the “create local backup” button.
I now will send the debug logs

Hello @Martin_Huber
Note: Norton 360 Remover Tool posted here
fwiw ~ my preference is Remove only…with scour File Explorer for remnants and CCleaner - Registry - Scan for Issues + CCleaner…back up the registry before making changes. Just me.

And you’re sure external drive has been reseated and is powered?
And you do find N360_BACKUP folder?
for example:

Have you reported “issue” via Norton support?
Having an open Case ID: number…will get more attention.

Please review: Contact Norton Support
Note: Norton Lv1 support will request “remote session” as they’re likely to do before escalating.
If you feel comfortable with “remote session”. I’d urge you (only if you feel comfortable) to allow “remote session”. Support may have a solution. Support will likely follow they’re playbook…which likely will involve Repair Norton, Reset to Default & clean re-install. Again, only if you feel comfortable. Then “unresolved issue” can be escalated.

Hello again @Martin_Huber
~ fwiw ~
I’m imagining since my ext drive is not always plug’d in…not always recognized. Upon plug in. Norton 360 needs time to call from N360_ BACKUP…folder and time to render/populate Local backups data & time to run scheduled task… Automatically sync.
Note: my Local backups → Automatically sync = off.

I’m imagining with Local backups → Automatically sync = on. Automatically sync task has priority upon ext drive plug in and render/populate Local backups data from N360_BACKUP folder may take time.

I’m imagining data moving between ext drive…where my Local backup data is stored & my int drive where Local backup data is displayed may take time. Time may vary depending on whether data is moving between HDDorSSD & SSDorHDD.

Were you able to find your Local backups after time or after cycling Norton tabs &or cycling Norton 360 user interface. Maybe, after re-plugging in your ext drive. Maybe, after your ext drive is recognized.

AI Overview
When you plug in an external drive, it typically becomes recognized by your computer as a new storage device, often assigned a drive letter. The drive’s contents become accessible, and you can transfer files to and from it as you would with any other storage drive.

Power and Connection:
The external drive receives power, either through the USB connection or a separate power adapter, and establishes a data connection with the computer.

Drive Recognition:
The operating system detects the new device and assigns it a drive letter (e.g., E:, F:).

AutoPlay (Optional):
In Windows, an AutoPlay window might appear, offering options like opening the drive or scanning it for viruses.

File Transfer:
You can now copy files to and from the external drive using standard methods like copy and paste, or drag and drop.

Software Installation (Generally Avoided):
While you can transfer software to an external drive, it’s generally not recommended as it can cause issues with the registry and software stability when the drive is disconnected.

Eject/Safely Remove:
It’s crucial to safely remove the drive before physically disconnecting it from the computer to ensure all data is written to the drive and prevent potential data loss or corruption.

AI responses may include mistakes.

it seems to me that it is a simple cable or external chassis failure. I changed external chassis and USB cable. Now I could see all the backups in Norton 360, that I’ve tried to and delete them. I formatted the drive now and started a new backup task.
I’ll keep you post if it runs properly now or not.
