Thread for version 24.xx issues and suggestions

Thanks SoulAsylum for inviting me.
I woke up on Oct 22 to find the new Norton 360 upgrade version 24. I feel this version is inferior to any other Norton products I’ve ever used since 2000. IT’S VERY BUGGY!!! I use Windows 10 Pro on 2 separate computers, so they shouldn’t be unique problems for me. I’ll list one to start.

1-Live Update and Software update are set to manual but still run several times a day. This app has a mind of it’s own.

This V24 thing is a dumpster fire of trash.

Software update tool runs despite being disabled.
Disk optimiser runs and has optimised my disks, while it is disabled.

This program is getting close to malware

For the last hour I have been trying to get Windows 11’s Miracast screen share option to work via Wifi to my Smart TV.

Worked flawlessly prior to the overhaul of Norton, now the only way I can get it to work is by - you guessed it - disabling Norton.

My instinct was to go into the firewall rules and edit, but I also just discovered I can’t?

Can anyone help here?

System info: HP Laptop with HP motherboard
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3550H
OS: Windows 11 Home 23H2
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1650
RAM: 16 GB
SSD: 512 GB Intel

The situation at hand is pretty weird but something I would expect from Norton since I’ve been using it for 3+ years (I guess). After the latest big update which also changed UI I have experienced a really frustrating issue (I’ll probably face this issue as soon as I turn off PC since it upgraded to latest Norton version again). 2 days ago I turned my PC off normally. And when I turned it on next day it was too slow in the black HP starting screen. After that it reads “Windows is missing some system files” and tries to fix it but to no avail. At some point I get a BSOD: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP (caused by ntoskrnl.exe). -Note: IDK when BSOD shows but I guess it matters little like chicken/egg situation-. The problem here was: PC won’t boot. But I managed to boot it using some EFI file in BIOS. Checked SSD health and system files situation and Windows found no compromises. At some point I uninstalled the Norton and voila. PC boots even faster than before.

Did you try Norton 360 v24.x
Mute all notifications temporarily?

Hello @lance317
“edit” Program Control?
Did you try Allow new app?

Did you try Edit
for example:

Yes, I did that and is still does not work.

and there is nothing in the program list entries for Win 11 screen casting that I can see.

I changed the settings to “ask” when a program tries to connect, yet I get no prompt when I try to cast my PC to my TV.

Only way it works is turning off Norton. This is only after the recent Norton upgrade.

Hello @lance317
Oh okay. I’ve not needed to tweak Smart Firewall.
Sorry, I’m not familiar tweaking General/Network/Program Control/Traffic Rules.

and internet connection sharing is no help?
and is device blocked?

Sorry, I’m not Smart TV savvy.
Maybe, try asking Norton support.

Make the new UI optional, bring back the classic view and all the features that were removed.

Yes I tried ‘Mute all notifications’ - really can’t tell whether is did anything or not. My incidations from the pre-V24 editions were that the Norton icon in the toolbar turned gray. I use this with long-running app processes such as video conversion, which I do NOT want to start over in case they get interrupted by a Norton background process, like update. I have never had a problem with Norton pre-V24 versions, so I don’t know if Norton Silent mode was really working.

Hi SoulAsylum. Let me ask you, if you turn your live update to manual and software updater to their manual positions, at the end of say 8 hours, do you see that they ran several times in security history anyway? Version 24.

Cannot clear the Norton 360 ‘Attention’ indicators. Looks like the alerts will persist until I purchase additional products. SMH …anyone else having difficulty clearing the red ‘!’ ?

Norton disables the internet why ? I have no idea so I uninstalled it and everything worked fine so it means the new norton has many issues so I`ll wait for any updates

V24 is not a good advert for the 1st Norton on my device to be badged Gen Digital.
While I was using the device. Unannounced, Norton begins the migration. 2x Desktop Icons, 2x Sys Tray Icons, 2x Entries in Add/Remove. Eventually, it cleared, leaving 1x Add/Remove entry, 1x Desktop Icon, 1x Sys Tray Icon. The device refuses to reboot; after several periodic prods of the Power Button, it boots and informs me in Problem Reports that ‘files are missing’.
I do have other devices, to investigate failures; but, they’ll migrate at some stage.
The device takes about 3-times longer to boot-up. The Norton Icon is the very last thing to appear in the Sys Tray. I’ve rehashed the ‘Start Menu’ to minimum spec, and put other items on ‘Delay Start’. The boot-time remains excessive.
The VPN drops any accessible ‘Speed Test’ by 30%. Firefox, ‘Fast(dot)com Speed Test’, informing me I’m not connected to the Web.
‘Quick Scan’ is much longer. ‘Full Scan’ is much shorter. Yet to run, ‘Startup Scan’.
I do appreciate that the myriad of devices will throw-up a good measure of bugs.
Summary. V24, is resource-hog, slowing the device down.

Hi BJM. Yes Indeed. Both Live up date & Software Updater will update themselves while set to manual. Not only that, but look at how many times Live Update ran in one day… Software update in off position runs once a day usually, like yours.
