What happened to malwarebytes

Curious I used to have the free version of malwarebytes and due to a reason I had it uninstalled. Although I realised now it might be helpful to have it once again, so I went to install the free version, and as I did what I usually would do, the Malwarebytes that was installed was the trial version. I uninstalled restarted my computer and tried again, and the same thing. The box to uncheck start trial never showed up, and I followed the clicking the grey download on their sight as one of the fourm posts said. that did not work either. What is happening and how can I get the free version again? As a note Geeksquad did look at my computer a while back, this is when I had malwarebytes uninstalled, and when i got ti back it was working liek it was before, which was rather well. Although I think they installed the malwarebytes rootkit thing called mbar, but it's not in my control panel progams to be uninstalled, so I don't even know if it functions. Although after this I could not get the fee version of it. I will show a picture of how it looks, because I could use help. I know you might not see it in the image, but it does say (trial) on it. Meanwhile my dads does not ahve that (trial) on the side. So could you pelase help me?

Hi, while we're waiting for the mods to approve your image, try this link. http://www.malwarebytes.org/

The free download tab is on the left.

Hi again, Exaiongamma,

I'm reposing a slightly edited version of the answer I sent you in response to your PM here, so folks who visit this thread in the future will see it. Thanks for sending the image. From that, I can tell what you have (had? it sounds like you might have uninstalled it) is indeed the right software. This may have been a change in the way Malwarebytes does business: obviously they would love it if everyone who downloaded the free version eventually paid them for the full version...so they've set it up to facilitate those transitions. You download the free version, and now it has those buttons down there at the bottom left, and you see them every time you run that free software. In their ideal world, eventually you get curious about the extra protection their paid product would offer, so you click on that "Activate" button, and that activates the trial version, temporarily enabling all that extra functionality that you weren't seeing before. And--again, in their ideal world--after you've experienced the benefits of their full product for a while, as your free trial nears its end, you click "Buy Now."

So if you want to download the free version off that link and install it again, you will be completely fine...as long as you never click either of those buttons.

The conflict between Norton and the paid version of Malwarebytes or its free trial is really a problem with having more than one security program installed that has real-time scanning functionality. By its nature, security software that does real-time (as opposed to "on-demand," i.e., "just when you run it") scanning is that it does a lot of things (like blocking other programs from accessing or altering it, disabling other programs--i.e., malware--and checking for vulnerabilities in the operating system & other software) that look like malicious activity. So if you've got another security program running that offers real-time protection, eventually it's going to see those activities and say, "Well, I'M security software...so this has got to be malware!" And then it's going to go after the activity to shut it down.

Which of course makes the other security program say, "Yikes--I'm under attack! It must be malware!"

At which point you have two programs that you installed on your computer to protect you, actively trying to undermine each other's operations. So the end result is you're paradoxically less protected than if you had either one alone. This last point is important: this is not Norton trying to get you to dump Malwarebytes. First off, I'm a volunteer, and not a Norton employee...but more to the point--while its not what I would recommend--I would rather see somebody who just insists on running the full version of Malwarebytes dump Norton than try to run them both together. My goal isn't to make money for Symantec; it's to help you keep your system secure.

Hope this answers your questions, and sorry for the delay!

Oh so the (Trial) thing on the side means nothing at all? And the change to how the protection tab means nothing as well?

As near as I can tell from the image you sent (given the continued presence of that "Activate" button), what you had was the free version. What can be confusing is that it's the same software as the trial version -- and, in fact, as the paid version -- (all the code for all those extra functions that would conflict with Norton--or McAfee, or Kaspersky, or AVG--is on you machine; it's just not enabled). Clicking "Activate" enables it temporarily, and then at the end of the trial period it goes back to not being enabled anymore. Clicking "Buy Now" and paying them enables it permanently. So as long as you don't click either of those buttons, there won't be any conflicts.

[UPDATE: The resolution of your screenshot is low enough that much of the text on the Malwarebytes window is unreadable, so it's been difficult to tell what you meant by a "trial thing on the side" or what you were saying about the protection tab. From what you said you did ("as you usually would do") and the behavior you described, and from what I could tell from your screenshot, it seemed like everything was in order, especially since you said you uninstalled and reinstalled Malwarebytes after you got nervous that something was different, and it still looked the same. But after I originally posted this response, something kept gnawing at me about your certainty that something was different. I looked at your screenshot again, and think I may see the word "(Trial)" at the end of the Malwarebytes window title at the top. Is that what you meant by "on the side"? After seeing that, I went to the Malwarebytes download link and installed the free version on my computer (it's a new one I hadn't had occasion to put it on yet). I clicked "GET MY FREE DOWNLOAD", and when the installer ran, I did see--and have to uncheck--a box for activating the free trial. When the program ran after installation was complete, it did not have that parenthetical "(Trial)" up top in the title bar. Based on that, here's what I think you did--and what I think Malwarebytes changed: when you follow that link, there's that big green "GET MY FREE DOWNLOAD" button that you're supposed to click...and then right below it, there's a link with an arrow that says "Free Trial." I think you clicked that by mistake (it is confusing)...and if so, you would have been installing the activated free trial--so you wouldn't have seen that box to uncheck--and would indeed have gotten the wrong software. So uninstall Malwarebytes (if you haven't already done so) and go back to the download screen, and instead of clicking "Free Trial" click the big green  "GET MY FREE DOWNLOAD" button. Install the software, and let us know if that gets you where you were trying to go.]

Yea the thing was I did click that big green get my free download button before, and the lower grey one after the big green one, and the same thing still happened, and yes I did mean the (trial). When I said the thing on the side, but yes I did do that before, and it still gave me that version, and for what I mean under the protection tab. I mean that instead of showing you what you are getting with the free version compared ot the pro one, it shows stuff mentioning about protection, and it has a big red X like it was disabled. So I don't know what to do now though. I do find it strange that you were able to get the free one, and when I click that I get the one that doens't even ask me to not enable the trial.

Hi Exainogamma:

If you want to disable the real-time protection in MBAM during the 14-day trial period, go to the Protection tab and disable the three check boxes shown below.

MBAM Protection Disabled.png

When the trial period is over, you will be presented with a warning similar to the image shown below.  Just select "End Trial" and MBAM's real-time protection and other PRO features will be permanently disabled and you will automatically revert to the free version.  More information about the trial version can be found here.

MBAM End of Trial.png

Please note that the installer for the free and paid (PRO) versions of MBAM (currently mbam-setup-1.75.0.1300.exe) are identical.  Users who purchase the PRO version and enter their activation key on the About tab have the PRO features enabled (e.g., real-time protection, flash scans, automated scheduling of updates and scans), while users who use the free version will see these PRO features disabled (greyed out) on the MBAM GUI - see the MBAM support article here.

Oh so if I just uncheck those checkboxes in the protection tab then I can use it as normal and the trial on it's own will revert back as long as I don't buy the pro version? Wait also i cannot see your pictures. What do the check boxes say?

Hi Exiaongamma:

You'll be able to see the images in message # 7 once they've been approved by a forum administrator, but in the mean time a similar image showing how to disable MBAM's real-time protection can be found here.

I've had the paid (PRO) version of MBAM on my computer since 2009, but yes, I believe the trial version will simply revert back to the free version as long as you select "End Trial" at the end of the 14-day trial period.

If you're really concerned you could try wiping the trial version off your computer using the MBAM Removal Tool as instructed here (see the section titled Free Version) but if the removal tool doesn't wipe every MBAM-related entry in your Windows registry you still might end up re-installing the trial version again.  I'd suggest just waiting for the 14-day trial period to end and see what happens.

Yea that is how my malwarebytes protection tab looked including the boxes that were unchecked. So basically during the 14 day period if I just leave those unchecked it will be okay then, all I will have to do is just wait it out the enxt time I get it then?

Hi Exaiongamma:

Yes, all you have to do now is to wait for the pop-up that will notifiy you when your 14-day trial period has expired.  If the current v. 1.75 MBAM installer still works the way previous versions did, the "(Trial)" label in the top banner of your MBAM GUI will also disappear once your trial period is finished.

Well i went to get malwarebytes and clicked on the green GET MY FREE DOWNLOAD button on their site, and I didn't get a promt to enbale the trial as before. So I thought it was the same I let it update and laucnh at the end of the download, and when I check it's the free version and not trial so I guess it worked now? Now clue why it worked now, but hey that helps. So can I assume everything is oaky?

Hi, Exaiongamma. If you clicked on the free download button as suggested, then that's what you will have.

Fwiw, I update the definitions database on a daily basis, and then run a quick scan.

I only run a full scan, if I have any concerns.

One suggestion, in the scanner settings tab, I have it set to Show in the results list and check for removal.

@lmacri,

Hi,

Could you, or anyone else who know, tell me whether you need to enable the Start protection module with windows option in the PRO version of 1.75 for the scheduled updates and scans to run?

TIA,

Dave

Nevermind...

According to the logs it would appear that you DO NOT need to start the protection module for the scheduled updates and scans.

PS : Flash Scans complete in < 30!

I've bought the lifetime license too (actually I bought two as I might be buying a laptop sometime).

I haven't upgraded to v2 yet, and I'm glad I didn't considering @Krusty13  and @F4E 's comments in this thread (not sure however is F4E is referring to the PRO  PREMIUM or FREE version...)

Should I decide to try the FREE version of v2, I wonder whether it would be enough to uninstall MBAM from Control Panel > Programs and Features and reboot?

The Help page doesn't say anything about it. I also did some google searches and apparently that's all one needs to do... :smileysurprised:

Thanks.

Hi Laura, The Mod's at Wilders forums CAN'T delete my posts here, so I will say that the ANNOYING warning popup you get when you disable the real time protection in v2.0 peeved me enough to resort back to v1.75.

To do that I first uninstalled by Windows Add/Remove programs, then ran their cleanup tool.  Thankfully my license information was saved when I installed the older version.

Personally, I think v2.0 is a work in progress at best!

End of rant.

Hi Krusty13:

I haven't installed MBAM Premium v. 2.0 yet, but there were many complaints during beta testing about the option to disable notifications under General Settings not working correctly.  The Known Issues here for Release Candidate 1, build 2.00.0.1000 (updated 10-March-2014) includes the following bug, so hopefully this pop-up will be fixed in the near future:

Disabling notifications only removes non-critical notifications so that you are still informed of problems with your protection.

Hello

I have the free version of Malwarebytes version 2. and I have no problems that I can tell with the new version. I ran their new quick version and it ran super fast for me. I didn't notice though any full scan, but I will have to check that again to see if there is one or not. I would think that there should be one as there was one on the last version I know.

Hi floplot:

You now have to use a Custom Scan to run a full scan in the new MBAM v. 2.0.

The new names for the v. 2.0 scans are:

  • Threat Scan (the old Quick Scan)
  • Custom Scan (which you can configure to run a Full Scan or customize to scan specific folders, etc.)
  • Hyper Scan (the old Flash Scan, which is only available for licensed PRO/Premium versions)

The Scan section of the online help for MBAM v. 2.0 at http://www.malwarebytes.org/support/guides/mbam/ has further details.
