Why is backup to a local drive not an option anymore. I might have my reason for that and it is not up to Norton to decide whether it is safe or not. It is my decison and I would like to have that option again. It is not at all a risk for Norton, it is my own risk.
This makes me very angry, honestly I am considering to cancel my contract with Norton.
Hello @MrStephen_Sparkes
Hello @Jack200106
Norton Chat support just now advised me that Norton v24 will backup to local external drive…after the cloud back up is full.
Note: I’ve not tested this, at this time.
as per Norton Chat support agent: in summary
So, my understanding…per Chat Support agent:
While v24 backup feature is changed regarding backup to external drive. Backup to external local drive can be done once cloud backup storage will be full. Note: I’ve not tested this, at this time.
as this time…my Cloud storage Used: 22 / 50 GB…my N360 v24 Data cache on local disk is only recognizing my internal drives.
Hello @Jack200106
as per my N360 v24…at this time.
&
as per my understanding…from Norton support Chat agent.
Back up to local drive will be available once cloud storage is full.
Note: I do not know regarding…create a separate backup set to my local external drive.
My N360 v24 at this time has one working/synching backup set…per machine.
Note: all Dell names = same machine. HP name = other machine.
I’ve created more v24 backups (same and other machine)…but, they’re not working/synching. They’re only Restore.
There are many types of files I would have no problem backing up to the Norton cloud. However, I will not back up any personal financial files to anyone’s cloud. Nor will I allow Norton or anyone else to remotely access the computer on which I store those files. If Norton does not fix this issue they will soon lose a 20 plus year customer.
Thanks to those who are updating the backup status - I appreciate your help!
I just discovered that I can no longer do a Norton Backup to my external hard drive. From all of the comments under this subject, I am apparently not the only one. I do not want my files on the cloud. If Norton does not revert back to the old backup options, then I too will be cancelling all of my Norton products and move on to some other security product. The clock is ticking.
Have also just discovered this, and it a real problem that I can no longer back up to an eternal ssd instead of the cloud. Very disappointed with Norton now, have been with them for many happy years - but if they do not restore the function quickly will have to go elsewhere and cancel my subscription with them
I don’t understand this. I now can’t restore something that was backed up to an external drive using the prior version? I’m befuddled. Did Norton make a mistake and not consider this, or did they consider this and didn’t care? I just don’t get it. How can I restore files from a previous backup? There’s no way? Then I’m screwed!
EDIT: I was looking at the contents of the external drive that I use for backups and Norton has a program there called “ARestore.exe”. They call it “Portable Restore” and you can use this to restore your files. It’s probably the same engine that was in the previous version but without the window dressing.
Been using Norton for backups for many years - now, after this latest update, can no longer back up to the external drive…WHY TAKE AWAY THIS FEATURE!!! The cloud backup size is not sufficient; don’t trust putting critical (to me) data in the cloud. Investigating other ways to backup my PC.
Thank you for those passing comment & advice on back up to an external drive not being available until cloud storage allocation used up.
Has anyone successfully done this yet please ?
Judging by comments so far users seem to be against backing up to the cloud and I support that .
I had a long phone call with the Norton team on the UK phone number ( I hope it was in UK !!! ?) supposedly escalated to a supervisor , I was informed they had had a “ few” calls about this and it had been Norton engineers are aware of this matter but so far nothing further known.
I informed them that I too was considering cancelling my 20+ years with Norton
As I did NOT want to back up to the cloud , which I had hard time in making clear to them. I stated that this matter may / could cause Norton to loose a lot of business / subcscribers. Told them I would contact the press and media to raise awareness for others , I suggest that others do the same especially if you have a direct contact in that field . Sometimes the only action to combat these large entities is to “hit” them through a drop in revenue.
I’ve just discovered this ridiculous situation.
I have no desire to back up to the damn cloud.
Why have Norton imposed this ridiculous situation on customers?
