I’m pretty sure that everything was fine yesterday but today Norton keeps crashing: There are still multiple entries in Task Manager but the tray icon is gone and the open window is closed. Sometimes it takes 5 minutes, sometimes it happens just 10 seconds after starting Norton again. It took 3 tries to find and copy the version number. While I was doing a scan, the window also kept closing itself randomly (tray icon was still visible) before it eventually crashed again.
I already restarted my PC multiple times and reinstalled Norton with the “Norton Remove and Reinstall“ tool.
I just installed Malwarebytes and ran a scan, which didn’t find anything.
It looks pretty similar to the error report in comment 349 of the “tracking thread for the new version 25.xx” (just a year later, can’t link it for some reason) and my browser is indeed open.
If you have any supporting screenshots, please add them:
fwiw ~ yesterday, as I recall.
I had a Norton update requiring machine Restart (not Shut down)
My Norton 360 remains at 26.2.10802 (build 26.2.10802.970)
I can’t remember if there was a restart but I remember that the Norton shortcut appeared on the desktop again (not sure if 2 days ago or yesterday), so there must have been some kind of update before all of this started happening.
Thanks for posting the link! Are new members limited in what they can post at first (now I can see the “link” symbol too)?
No but the “Norton Remove and Reinstall” uninstalled Norton first anyway. Is there a difference?
No, not yet. So far it’s been behaving well today, no crash yet (still the same version) and the window also hasn’t closed itself again while I’m writing this but I also haven’t done a lot with my browser yet (if they’re indeed connected). I did multiple restarts already yesterday, so I doubt the full shutdown yesterday and starting it again only today fixed it. I’ll see, I guess.
The repair didn’t work. But I did just notice something interesting:
While I was replying in this and the other thread, everything was fine.
I then loaded an existing youtube tab in my browser (Firefox 148.0.2 = latest) and Norton crashed again. Restarted Norton, loaded another tab and … gone again. Firefox is set to restore previous tabs and afaik they don’t fully load until you click on them. So far Norton has crashed with every old youtube tab that I loaded but it looks like this only happens when the video actually starts to play (or there’s a delay).
I opened Chrome, which is also set to restore tabs (but there are no youtube tabs in it) and played a random youtube video in a new tab - Norton’s gone again. Same thing in Firefox, it looks like it’s not even related to restoring old tabs, new tabs are also affected, even existing tabs are when I skip ahead in the video.
please don´t do this. I use Norton since 1997. I have no problem with Visual Studio C++!! Safe. This is a norton failure. trust me! My Visual Studio C++ is fine.
@Sim26 The Web Secure Engine. The architecture ist based on Visual Studio C++!! Tada..
Maybe, I can reproduce…my side? Do I just call a YouTube video?
Do you run Norton VPN?
Do you run Norton Safe Web extension?

Potential Causes for the Crash While an official root-cause statement from Gen Digital is still pending, the current technical consensus points to two likely culprits:
VPN Infrastructure Conflicts: YouTube has recently updated its traffic-filtering scripts. These updates appear to be aggressively blocking or interfering with the “Secure VPN” component of Norton, which can cause the Norton UI service to hang or terminate unexpectedly when trying to process YouTube’s data.
Script Interference: A bug in Norton’s Safe Web or Intrusion Prevention system may be failing to handle specific scripts used in YouTube’s new interface, leading to a “segmentation fault” that crashes the user interface (though background protection often remains active).
How to Fix or Work Around the Issue If you are experiencing these crashes, follow these troubleshooting steps in order:
1. Update via LiveUpdate Norton is likely working on a “hotfix.” Even if you have automatic updates on, manual checks can sometimes pull down the latest definitions or a version 26.3 patch.
Open your Norton product.
Click LiveUpdate and run it until it says “No more updates.”
Restart your computer.
2. Disable Norton VPN Temporarily Many users have found that the crashes stop immediately when the VPN is off.
Go to the My Norton dashboard.
Locate Secure VPN and click the arrow next to “Turn On/Off” to disable it.
Try loading YouTube again.
3. Disable the Norton Safe Web Extension If the app continues to crash, the conflict may be in your browser’s extension.
Go to your browser settings (Chrome, Edge, or Firefox).
Navigate to Extensions and toggle Norton Safe Web to “Off.”
Refresh your YouTube tab.
4. Check for Version 26.3 A newer version (26.3) has already begun rolling out for some platforms (notably macOS) to address stability issues. If your Windows version is stuck on 26.2 and the above steps don’t work, you may need to use the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool to force a clean installation of the latest available build.
Current Status The issue is currently being monitored by Norton support teams. Most users report that turning off the VPN is the most effective immediate fix until a permanent software patch is distributed.
Yes, just start Norton, then start a random youtube video and give it a couple of seconds to load. Usually there’s a delay of 1-2 seconds until Norton crashed. If I pause a video, start Norton, then unpause, it usually takes a little bit longer, probably because some of the video is already cashed.
I’m on Win 11 Pro. How do I check for a new version in Norton?
I tested Firefox (148.0.2=latest, uBlock Origin, signed in) and Chrome (146.0.7680.154=latest, uBlock Origin Lite, not logged in). Yes, I already disabled uBlock Origin Lite on Chrome but Norton still crashes when I play a video.
I’m also running Norton on another PC that also uses Firefox (same version, uBlock Origin and a couple of other browser extensions, also logged in) and it’s been fine there.
Sounds exactly like this crash.
Haven’t got a problem playing youtube videos but I’m also not using Norton VPN, so…
Going to sign out in a bit for the weekend but I’m going to be back on Monday and I can do more testing then (unless the other PC starts to be affected too).
Only happens when playing videos on youtube. Latest version of W11 and Norton up to date. I can post event viewer logs if that would help. It looks like Norton isn’t exactly crashing and instead looks as though something is causing it to log out.
@SaammyWN30 Is your current version of Visual Studio up to date? Having used this software since 1997 doesn’t actually mean anything other than you are fluent in using it. Additionally, most folks are running the Microsoft Windows 11 “Microslop” which after months of botched updates cannot seem to run correctly.
I invite you all to review this MS article to validate whether your current C++ is the latest. C++ is NOT exclusive to Visual Studio and is used extensively by other programs.
Starting today, these events no longer create entries in the event log. No errors, no warnings and no information. Norton just closes/logs out when a video is played on youtube. Also I’m not currently using the safe web plugin or vpn.
