I just got updated to version 24.12.9725 from version 22. I have finished going through the settings, and I have some questions/complaints about Backup:
In Security, every time I select the Cloud Backup tile Norton automatically starts “syncing.” But all I want to do is to examine which files are included in the backup set. Is there any way to check that without starting a “sync”?
When I click on the X (over on the right, next to the Restore arrow) to stop the sync, Norton reports that it’s “cancelling” the backup, but so far it doesn’t seem to finish the cancellation, it just keeps saying that it’s cancelling. Does it ever actually cancel and stop the sync?
In previous versions of Norton, when setting up Backup I could navigate to different folders on my PC from within the backup UI, click boxes to select the specific files that I wanted to include in the backup set, and then tell the backup process to begin. Now there seems to be no way to do this: as soon as I select any file, it starts backing it up. What I want to do–as I have always done–is to select two specific files from different folders to include in the backup set, and only then back up those two files (sequentially) in a single operation. Is there any way to do this in v24?
Now, while the “cancellation” of the cloud backup is taking place, I seem no longer to be able to go in to Manage the backup set: everything under Backup of this PC is grayed out.
Is there a way to completely deactivate the backup function, as there was in v22?
I am at a loss. First I absolutely hate this new Norton 360. I find it to be very unfriendly and it is constantly giving me popups for threats that do not seem to exist.
One of these is for the Windows powershell. I find no way to prevent this popup or prevent this being considered a threat. After 20+ years of using Norton I am about ready to shut it down and use another service!
Here’s a suggestion. Old version allowed users to specify how long a notification window would stay on the screen. Not the new version. Some notifications (e.g. detected new thumb drive) will stay up until you manually close it. (By the way, I don’t need N360 to let me know that I just inserted a thumb drive. I ought to know that already, right?) There’s no way to turn that feature off unless you disable all notifications.
Also any Windows settings that affects the font size (e.g. in Ease of Access to enlarge the font) will randomly corrupt the N360’s notification pop-up windows so not all the options are visible or accessible. For example, if you have a custom rule to ask whether to allow or block some traffic, those buttons end up outside the pop-up and inaccessible. You’re forced to close the notification window by using Windows’ Task Manager.
And why do the N360 notification windows have to be so huge? Some notifications pop up in the middle of the screen, taking up most of the screen’s real estate.
@bjm & @Puzzler
Having to “reset to default” is ridiculous. Did Gen run out of money so they couldn’t afford just one more toggle switch?
BJM, I’m curious Amigo, how do you know that Norton is reading this post? Let alone actually doing something to correct any issues. I’ve gotten 3 updates since OCT 24 and nothing has gotten any better on my list of grievances.
Happy Holidays guys.
@bjm Thanks. Good suggestion but I had clicked on “don’t offer to scan” but it doesn’t stick. It randomly reactivates. Don’t know if connecting a different drive resets it or what. It’s that way on all my computers. Wondering if v24 files got corrupted when they installed. It installed on different days on my computers. I mentioned on another thread that v24 randomly deleted custom firewall traffic rules. The rules that were deleted were different on each computer even though all of the systems had identical rules prior to the install. All systems are running on the same OS and all had been running the same version of N360 (previous to v24). Same issue with Network settings. V24 randomly changed public - private settings on each one.
This is why I cautioned in another post for everyone to double check ALL of their previous settings to ensure the v24 install didn’t corrupt the settings. It would be understandable if we were dealing with a feature new to v24 but the settings changed were on pre-existing features.
V24 is just buggy. Hopefully Norton will get the bugs fixed but it’s obvious v24 wasn’t ready for prime time. It should have undergone a more rigorous beta test. It actually makes me wonder if its properly performing its primary function ------ security. I hope AV-Test or another independent outfit will take v24 out for a spin to check if its detection rate hasn’t suffered as well.
@majorbuzz Have you considered rolling back to the previous version of N360. Some of us have done that and wait for Norton to work out the bugs in v24? I also want to see a new independent test of v24’s AV detection rate. Hopefully the bugs are limited to the UI and not scattered throughout its software. @SoulAsylum on the thread below provided download links and instructions on uninstalling v24 and installing the previous version. Uninstall new version (V 24) Norton360 premium and reinstall old version
@Puzzler. I decided against rolling back. Besides the many quirks (and that’s putting it nicely ) within version 24, it was either BJM or Soul Asylum that ran some tests. Granted they admitted they didn’t come close to lab testing, but what I saw, and how I see mine doing various things by blocking certain sites etc, believe it or not, I’m pretty confident it’s protecting me. I’ve used Microsoft Security Scanner (MSERT), Malwarebytes (free), and Trend Micro’s Housecall (on demand scanner) after installing 24. All three didn’t find anything, and especially that MSERT is one intense scanner. or should I saw it scans over double the number of files Norton does on a full system scan. Though I know THAT doesn’t necessarily make it a great scanner.
To add my 2¢, I don’t think Norton has shown in anyway their enthusiasm for fixing 24. I’m thinking it’s a bust… period. The same way that Microsoft Millennium, Vista, and 8 were. These two companies don’t fix, they just move on.
fwiw ~
my $0.02 is that Norton pushed in-place upgrade v22 to v24 is causing issues
my preference re v24 would have been opt-in with clean install
I’ve clean re-installed after v24 in-place upgrade and v24 version updates
my v24 feels settled…albeit, lacking v22 functions
my v24 protection feels solid…based upon my novice testing
Note: my $0.02 is solely based upon my v24 experience
Here’s something brand new to report after reverting almost a month ago. An Avast directory was placed on this current device yesterday ( please note the install date in the screenshot to validate ). I am on version 22.24.8.36 which SHOULD be devoid of anything Avast. Conversely, I seem to remember a similar thing happening before the 24.xx fiasco was pushed without warning. Those screenshots were on the old forums, most likely gone now. Its interesting though that this appeared yet again after reverting almost a month ago.
My 2 cents is 24.xx may be “solid” for some using it, its not for me. The above screenshot is one reason. Depreciated features that I no longer have any control of is the main issue. Norton appears to be following Microsoft with their favorite thing. When something new is added to Windows the wording is “Microsoft now ALLOWS”. I get it that software is proprietary and we do not per se own it. Neither does any company “own” my computer or mobile device, nor should use them for their business development, ads and telemetry, nor funding a bottom line gain. Period!! There is a lot wrong with installing things without the owner of any device being aware of it beforehand. EULA’s appear to be CTA from my perspective. I entertain someone Norton to explain how this got installed, privately or otherwise. I don’t believe that is asking too much!! End of rant.
I see this is a collection of issues.
For visibility, I will post the thread of a fellow user as well as mine here regarding a similar issue, where Norton or nllToolsSvc.exe is causing a window to loose focus:
(both threads are also linked with each other for better visibility)
@Puzzler You mentioned in previous posts something about rolling back, could you please provide me with some detailed information how this is done? My subscription is ending in 2 days and I am still hesitant/against renewing, as this issue can be pretty impactful.
@V_M @SoulAsylum posted links to downloads and instructions on the thread at this link. Uninstall new version (V 24) Norton360 premium and reinstall old version - #4 by SoulAsylum
They say misery loves company and if it’s any consolation, v24 is behaving increasingly erratically with time (manifesting different problems on each of my computers). I was on the fence about rolling back but I’m done babysitting the new version. I’m glad for people who aren’t having major issues but personally I no longer trust that v24’s problems are limited to the UI.
@Qurorororo@Atticus I want to confirm, reverting to v22 removes the “loosing focus” issue so gaming can be uninterrupted again.
I wanted to ask, if anyone knows, if Norton is going to eventually force us to use the new UI (as in, use v24 or you won’t get protection anymore)? I have 2 days subscription left and I will only re-sub if I can keep using the v22 that has no issues, if they force me to use the new one that causes issues, I will be quitting them.
As a separate issue what I saw in v24. The SafeCam lacked the option to “Ask me” or “Allow once / block once”. I have no idea why they removed those, as I actively used them.
As an example, I have allow on OBS, my streaming software, since I only use it for stream and thus use my cam. For Steam I have block cam, since why would Steam want my camera anyway? But for VoiP programs like Skype or Discord, I put it on “ask me”, since sometimes I log in to just type/talk and thus press “block once”, but sometimes for meetings I used them with a cam and I use “allow once”. With v24 its either block or allow and need to go to the settings every time I need to change that.
As a practical example, my dad wants a cam call on Discord, I start it (nothing pops up since by default I have blocked access), we start call, I try to put on cam and Norton says it’s blocking it, so I need to apologize, end the call, exit Discord, go to Norton menu, change Discord to allow, do the call with cam normally and after that, I need to remember to disable it on Norton again. (In v22, I start Discord, it asks me, I say oh yeah I need it today so allow once, or, nah I don’t need it today block once).
